Discrimination on 'Bad Friday'

I think it's about time something was done about Bad Friday. It's uncontroversial to say that the vast amount of Irish people, of all Catholic flavours and none, would vote instantly against this insane piece of legislation. This internet community would be representative of the people at large (EDIT: in relation to this issue specifically) and so something beneficial can be done to help raise these opinions to those in power and what better way than to quantify our supporters in the form of a petition. Of course, it would be silly to suggest it would eliminate this law altogether, but the point would be to at least flag the issue and over time this will eventually be challenged. But by sitting down and doing nothing - it won't change.

    <snip>

I think this would be a very positive development so hopefully this message can finally get out properly to the higher authority of this country so that in time it will eventually be done away with. :)

    :D
'This' community is more concerned about getting a drink on Friday than anything else.

    No it doesn't.

    Ireland is 84% catholic.

Boards is full to the gills of angsty internet atheists.

Jesus people get very upset when they can't buy alcohol.

And people still argue that we don't have a drink problem in this country.

Pfft. Ireland is full of "I don't go to mass and I do whatever I like, but fuk it, I'm a catholic -just to be on the safe side of course!" Catholics.

No you're completely missing the point. It's the principle that we have a discriminatory law primarily based on one particular religious community trying to dominate everyone else.

This has nothing to do with alcohol. You can be a supporter of this movement and not drink alcohol for example.

It's nothing to do with people having a drink problem as a lot of folk just like to relax out and have a few beers. I just buy extra on thursday and problem solved.

You haven't the slightest idea about sampling if you think the internet (and Boards in particular) is representative of society in general.

Apart from this, I would support steps to increase secularism in this country.

Do you know your 'lifestlye' is considered immoral? Wasting your timing there, Redzer. They'd burn you at the stake if they cpuld get away with it :D.

It's the principal of it all. Why should I have to comply with their beliefs when everyone should have the option of buying drink and those who are religious can simply not do it.

When I said representative I was specifically referring to this particular problem in society. I would never claim boards.ie is representative of all issues. I should have clarified that in my opening post. :pac:

I wiould imagine people working in the pub industry love it (except owners). They only have this and Christmas day as official closing days.

    You forgot Christmas Day.

Sad state of affairs if people can't do without a pub for 2 days of the year. Here's my petition :D

I know my lifestyle is immoral and I wouldn't have it any other way or be happier with it!

And here, I'd burst into flames just by crossing the church threshold :P

A poll here would be nice on this issue.

84% born Catholic more like it. No wonder they are building more churches and hiring more priests as they are packed to the rafters with 4 million people attending mass every Sunday and of course not drinking alcohol or eating meat this Friday!

It was sarcasm folks, I even brought "Jesus" into the equation. I better insert an emoticon.

I think a poll was done recently and it was overwhelmingly in support of decriminalising 'Bad Friday'.

I am not catholic but I don't see the harm in pubs being closed for one day other then Christmas. I think its a cultural thing rather then religious now and I don't really see the big deal about one day.

Please see one of the other gazillion good Friday threads for closure reasons.

Please do not use this forum to raise petition numbers.
