Comparing processors

My girlfriend has to source some computers for work for a new system. She was told the minimum specs were 4GB of RAM, 500mb hard drive and an i3 processor with windows 7. She got some that matched those specs but was told the processors were "too cheap". I'm not exactly sure why this was. Anyway she's asked me to find some for her.

I was hoping someone could point me in the direction of a good place to source them. I was also hoping someone could direct me to a place where there might be some comparisons between processors. For example, what is the equivalent AMD to the Pentium I5?

I've had a look at Elara and Komplette but i don't know any other sites in Ireland.

Ok clearly, there's either a serious lack of communication here or one/both of you are computer illiterate. That's OK, your best option is to fill in the questionnaire found in the sticky on this forum. Only then can we properly help you.

500MB processor doesn't make sense. 500MHz processor does, but I don't know if there's ever been a processor that slow, so there's miscommunication going on there somewhere. If you have anything that the IT department gave your girlfriend, best to post that up directly.

What I think is happening is that she was originally provided with the wrong specs by the software installer and they are trying to back out of this by saying she got a cheap processor. That was what they said to her. She knows very little about computers and I'm not very knowledgable on hardware so there's obviously an issue there.

    1. What is your budget? 500

    2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? Server for storage and calculations

    3. Do you need a copy of Windows? Yes

    4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? No

    5. Do you need a monitor? No

5b. If no, what resolution is your current monitor and do you plan to upgrade in the near future? Not sure. Computer is only for processing. no advanced graphics required.

    6. Do you need any of these peripherals? No

    7. Are you willing to try overclocking? No

    8. How can you pay? Any way

    9. When are you purchasing? ASAP

Do you have hard drives already, or will you need to include those? What sort of software is it going to be running exactly?

Sorry yeah that was just a mistake on my end. There was a bit missing from the middle of the sentance. It should be a 500mb hard drive and an i3 processor. The processor they originally got was an intel celeron cpu g550 2.6ghz but they have been told it's too cheap and not good enough. They got it from a site called eurieka.ie but I'm starting to think they may have been scammed.

Gotcha. What software are you going to be using though? A G550 might well be enough.

It's betting software. Bet calculations and databases. I just rang the software company myself and asked for the recommended specs. This is what he gave me. It seems the specs change with each person you talk to.

    i5 3rd generation
    6gb ram
    250gb HD

They won't provide tech support because they claim the processor is not good enough. The software is called Arkle

That's bull. They don't have a choice; you bought their software, they have to help, regardless of your specs.

Anyway, here's what you can get for €500:

    Item|Price
    BitFenix Merc Alpha|€34.13
    ASRock H61M-DGS, Sockel 1155, mATX|€39.89
    8GB G.Skill PC3-10667U CL9|€45.14
    Intel Core i5-3470 Box, LGA1155|€171.14
    WD Scorpio Blue 500GB SATA 3Gb's (7mm)|€46.98
Super Flower 400W Golden Green Pro 80plus|€58.10
    Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit (SB-Version)|€80.84
    Shipping|€18.99
    Total|€495.21

From talking to them I got the impression he didn't know anything about hardware. I've told the girlfriend that they should go back to their old system. I mean there's no guarantee a new system will improve anything. And it's four of them they'll be buying.

Thanks for the suggestion. Is it still €40 for assembly from that site?
