Muesli recommendation

    Hi,

    I need a change from porridge. So:

    What the best (healthiest) brand of muesli on the market now?
    One thats not full of sugar and sweeteners.

    it be very hard to find one that's has little or no sugar in it, has up to 60-70% of muesli is made up from dried fruit(high in sugars)

    have you tired having eggs for breakfast for a change from porridge?

    My OH gets his from the Dublin Food Co-Op or from The HopSack in Rathmines. It's the Organic Deluxe Muesli. He hates sugary things and had been looking for a long long time for one that's not sweet and he loves this stuff. I never eat it, myself, so I can't say.

    If you're bored with your porridge you could try changing up your toppings either!

    Cheers folks. No change of topping is going to get me eating porridge very often, im struggling lately with it though.
    I just need to mix it up a bit.

    Occasionally i do have eggs, but im odd in the morning, and sometimes i crave cold things and not always a warm breakfast.
    So i need a decent muesli.

    Overnight oats are nice too: 40g oats mixed with milk/water(i use coconut or almond milk) whisk and add 1 egg white, 1 scoop whey(optional) leave in fridge and top in the morning with some yogurt and berries.
    Sounds wrong but actually really sweet and yummy you should give it a try :)

    If your muesli is too sweet you can just add more porridge oats to dilute it down.

    I think flanhavans hi-8 has no added sugars, only sugar from the fruit.

    chain of shops here, owned by UK poundland company, selling stuff cheap, often sourced from outside of normal distributors here, so pepsi might not taste like the pepsi you are used to. And weird pack sizes.

    I find Jordans muesli very good, tastes nice but not v sweet which is what I prefer.
    You can get it in tesco or most discount stores

    +1 for this. The blue bag is fruit and nut, or the green (I think) has only nuts. It's the business.

    Lidl seem to have two brands - the bagged ones that you mention, and the boxed 'Goody Swiss Style' ones, which are cheaper, and have less fruit. The 'no added sugar' in the blue box of the Goody brand suits me, as I throw in some frozen berries myself. I thought I was doing great on it, till I started using 'myfitnesspal' this morning, and it tells me that my serving (weighed at 180g) comes in at 668 calories, before I add milk or fruit?

    Are all the other mueslis going to be in the same ballpark?

    180g is a lot. If you check tesco.ie you can see various type with nutritional info. Tesco finest shows a recommended portion as 50g, 385kcal per 100g.

    Lifeforce brand on tesco has nutritional info saying "Typical values per 100g serving" 369kcal

    This might be just tesco inputting the data blindly, and might not be the recommended portion.

    Flanhavans hi 8 is called out as 40g.

    They usually do quote smaller portions than most people eat, but your 180g vs 40g is a huge difference.

    Get the FruitnFibre from Tesco's and Lidl's Goody Nut's muesli, mix them together and try that.

    Thats not low sugar!

    This one is far better and is about 1.40 for 1 kg.

    Typical Values 100g contains

    Mono Unsaturates 1.8g

    The sugar listing will also take into account naturally occuring sugar, 100% oats have some sugar, skimmed milk actually has more sugar than regular lilt, not the same type of sugar though.

    This is the tesco swiss one
    Oat Flakes,Malted Toasted Wheat Flakes ,Raisins (13%) ,Sugar ,Whey Powder ,Mixed Nuts (4%) (Hazelnuts, Almonds) ,Sunflower Oil ,Malted Toasted Wheat Flakes contain: Wheat ,Sugar ,Barley Malt Extract ,Salt
    They are listed in order of greatest so it must be between 4% & 13% added sugar. The raisins will have a lot of sugar, lets say 70%. So 13%x70% means about 9g of the 17.4g is from raisins there will be a few grams from the others, and then the remainder is added sugar. YOu can see they also sneak in sugar at the end again, in 2 forms, sugar & malt extract. This is a common trick, they can come up with loads of different names for sugar and list separately.

    The cheapo tesco one actually has no added sugar
    Oat Flakes,Wheat Flakes ,Toasted Wheat Flakes ,Barley Flakes ,Mixed Dried Fruits (7%) ,Hazelnut (1%) ,Mixed Dried Fruits contains: Sultanas ,Raisins ,Sunflower Oil
