I'm sure that has ben answered before, but I couldn't find anything in the search results. If you hold an CI A4 licence with VET designation, should you sign on at race in the Vets catagory (which might be bundled in with the A3's or Ladies) or just enter the A4 catagory. I don't hold an IVCA licence.

    I had a (non-Vet) A3 licence in 2011, but club-comp in 2012 and could only renew under an A4 for 2013

    Sign on A4
The only recognised categories in Cycling Ireland are A+ A1 A2 A3 A4 Junior
The only time vet comes in to play is for a championship

Sorry wav1, but that's not quite correct

There is a non-open Masters category that CI introduced last year that A4s and Club riders can participate in, but only if over 50 (I suspect Glennamaddy is not quite there though ;)). They are mainly run in Ulster (I did one on Sunday which was combined with a ladies race) although there was at least one run in Leinster last year

I think the Masters designation is purely a Cycling Ulster innovation.
For the rest of the season the only cats available are a+/A1/2/3/4 or in the case of national championships Vet (A4's are ineligible for national champs)

No it's not (hence the Leinster race last year;)). It was a rule change introduced at the 2011 CI AGM. However only Ulster clubs seem to be currently (very successfully I might add) running such races. It's open to any club to run one alongside their open races

Junior is also a recognised C I category [reintroduced at 2011 AGM]
Cycling Ireland dont have an over 50s masters recognised category. Its just something that started in Ulster and tbh is still really only happening there. You can ride these with a club comp licence.

Where would one find a calendar of the Ulster races with an "Over 50" catagory?

Chapter G8, section 11 of the current rules

Non-open races may only be run on Mondays through to Thursdays. Notwithstanding non-open races
which are run as a series of races and known as a league may be run at any time subject to these being
promoted for a defined group of riders e.g. veterans, women, time trialists etc . A club promoting an open
race may run a non-open race on the day of their open promotion regardless of the day of the week in
respect of riders of 50 years old and over and women

The change was introduced last year following a proposal put by Cyling Ulster to the 2011 AGM

Yes Beasty a ''non open race'' but still not a recognised C I category
Funny enough we dont have a womans category either at the moment
They are ability ranked and licenced accordingly.

There was a list originally but it seems to have disappeared now the calendar is simply a repeat of th CI one without such details

I just keep an eye on the Cycling Ulster website - the good news is these races are never oversubscribed so you can turn up and sign-on on the day

I was going to mention they "rank" equally with the women's races. Perhaps I should have used the term "category of race" rather than "racing category" to avoid the confusion ...

Pardon my ignorance, i'm new to the whole thing. What age do you have to be for the vets?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 851 ✭✭✭GlennaMaddy

40 to get an CI licence denoted with the letters VET, but 50+ to enter an CI vet race
40+ to get an IVCA licence and to enter IVCA vet race.
You can't enter an IVCA race with an CI licence and vice versa, but you can hold an IVCA and CI licence at the same time.

    Clear?

I was under the impression that an IVCA licence was acceptable to enter a CI race? Is that not the cause of a certain amount of "ill feeling" between the two organisations?

AFAIK an IVCA license is acceptable to enter CI races , but a CI license while insuring you to ride ICVA ones is not enough on its own . You have to join the IVCA and their race program as they use the entry list to draw up marshalling rosters.

No ill feeling at all i do bemoan their better ability to get concessions from CI for their members from time to time but no ill feelings
IVCA lic accepted at CI events (A3) CI not accepted at IVCA events

my understanding from last year was that because they were introducing a new system all CI lic holders had to join the IVCA. I also was under the impression that this year they would allow ci vets to do a few races ad hoc but they decided they wouldnt allow it.

When I finish in November it will be my only regret that we didnt persuade the ivca to come in under the CI umbrella.

again I will reiterate my pledge to assist any group that wants to setup a vets league in any of the provinces. I think we could also try to get a national vets commission in place. One immediate goal would to have age related National Champs!!
