Found this video. Ignore the aussie, he stops after a few seconds and he lets the giant video play.

Looks like Giant are using social media to make some big claims!

What do you think? The video is convincing and a good approach by the marketing department.

We're seeing more and more advertising and marketing delivered through social networking. Some of it indirect, disguised or subliminal. Giant have a more 'infomercial' approach here, which I'm more comfortable with. The points they raise are all pretty valid, and they'd have to be able to stand over the claims and results they've published.

This is pretty well born out in real life when you look at the performance of their 2013 range.

Obviously they have cherry picked tests that will reflect well on their own machines compared to the opposition. My only reservation is their "torsional stiffness" test incorporating the fork instead of an iron bar. By doing this they are measuring the flex in the frame AND fork combined. They could beat the competition just by fitting a very non compliant fork. Also, tbh it's a bit rich loading weight comparisons for frames without an integrated seat post by 250g!

Specialized bike in the background but trying to sell a Giant is an interesting touch in marketing alright.....

Giant do seem to have stepped up to the plate in 2013 though with the Defy winning bike of the year with Bike Radar. There are some great videos around at the moment though. Beats photos.

He's not trying to sell Giant, most of the time he ride around on a bamboo frame road bike XD

Yep, I thought that adding 250 grams was a bit much. Also, I have a Scott addict size M - and mine weighs over 100 grams less than they have in their table.

So, if the weight data is questionable, you would have to wonder about the other claims they make.

I think it would be easy to nitpick a lot of those figures. It can't be denied though that they have huge resources and they make the bikes for a lot of other brands, so it would be surprising if they didn't have an edge. I think their overall 'packages' including parts are very good too, they seem to integrate everything together very well instead of just using whatever kit they could get cheap like a lot of brands seem to do. I'm in the market for a new roadbike now - I would normally be drawn to the sexier euro brands, but based on the reviews I've read, its hard to say no to a Defy or TCR.

That all came across as a bit desperate IMO.

I think the very top end giants look pretty cool but on account of marketing videos like that I would probably be a lot less inclined to ever get one.

love the idea that he's saying some of the bikes are 1kg heavier when you look its all the aero frames (ahich are known for been heavier)

Interesting to compare some of these claims with tests carried out by Tour. LINK - pg60 for the frame test.

The test for stiffness looks very similar there (i.e. it use the the fork) and yet the Giant gets beaten several other bikes, some of which are not even German!

It's also interesting to see which bikes are omitted from Giant's charts.

Not that any of this matters to talentless fatties like us of course. This is purely academic. And never trust a vegan. Certainly not a proselytising one.
