    Hi Guys,

So i'm planning a new build. This one will be interesting because the goal is to build it as cheaply as possible.

It's main uses will be HTPC, utility box (downloads, overnight tasks) and backup/storage node.

Being a HTPC means it must be able to output 1080p without any issue. I obviously don't want it to whine like a mad thing but i'm not really aiming for silent either. At a minimum, RAID 1 must be available with RAID 5 a bonus. Also, looking for 2 hard drives of same capacity (500GB-1024GB each).

I don't really require an optical drive tbh, I'd throw one if possible but it's not required.

I'd also like to add that i'm completely open to buying any/all the components used.

My budget for an all new machine would be €350 + shippping and about €250ish for a completely pre-owned system, obviously in the middle for a mix of both.

So, i'll start off the process with a quick scan of HWVS and sort by price ascending :D

Next stop, scan adverts and the for sale thread on here.. Feel free to provide any builds, offers of parts for sale.

What are ye're thoughts on those little mini itx pcs you see with the VIA cpus? I'm guessing they'd tick all the boxes for me except the storage (3.5" x 2)

How much storage do you need? Fractal's Node 304 might be worth a look. Six 3.5 mounts (and looks really nice too).

    That looks nice alright.

I would say 500GB absolute minimum about 1/1.5TB would be ideal. I'd probably get away with 2 x 3.5 bays but possibly need 3 if the MOBO offered RAID 5.

I'm considering this but I think the video output could be an issue. I'm trying to figure out if you can do HDMI with that card? and audio passthrough?
