Savings: Maybe small investment? Help?

Hi guys , I currently have 5k ish savings in the post office and would like to put 500 - 1k aside to invest in. What is a good punt these days? E.g Apple etc. something small that's all , jelly bean return to some people , low risk if that's even happening in today's economic climate. Cheers. :cool:
