UK car insurance

Quick q. to get some feedback from anyone with recent experience of insurance in the UK from Ireland

Have a nephew who has gone to work in the UK but will be back and forth every couple of weeks with his car - his insurer here are saying he needs to cancel his policy and get insurance in the UK instead.

I worked in the UK some years back on a similar basis and my insurer at the time said no problem, they covered me in the UK as well without the need for any special arrangements (based on me telling them I'd be doing more driving over there than here for a no. of months etc.)

So, in others experience, is this an insurer-specific thing whereby they all have their own views on such matters, or has the "law" changed in terms of their ability to provide cover in the UK for anything more than a holiday type period of time ?

Thanks in advance for any assistance

I think most policies have 30 days abroad as part of the policy(check his) so presumably if he gets the ferry back and forth less than every 30 days it should cover him as it resets the 30 days abroad part. If the car will be staying over there longer then that would he look into getting a cheap runaround over there? Someone more knowledgeable than me should be along to verify if what I've said is right.

Check Liberty (formerly Quinn). They were the only insurers who would insure me both in the UK as well as Ireland.

Most of them will cover you in the UK for short visits, e.g. heading up to Belfast. But if you're working (and ordinarily resident) in the country then you should get insured/taxed/registered in the UK. If its a defined term contract and you intend to move back to Ireland then you should be able to get the Irish insurance to cover you for the time in England without registering there. If the contract is over 6months or the amount of time the car spends in England is over 6 months they will probably be looking at you to register the car there. Having said that French mates in England never bothered and got away with that (and speeding/parking fines) for a couple of years.

Is buying an English car and flying back and forth out of the question?
