Building a PC for 3D modelling.

Which is a good starting off point for graphics cards? It's been a few years since I built a PC, and that one was for audio processing, so graphics kind of passed me by, using the bare minimum to do what I needed.

I'll be using a lot of 3D programs, like Cinema4D, After Effects, so on. What are the differences between NVIDIA and ATI/AMD where this is concerned? It would be handy to have dual output on the one card.

It'll be built piece by piece, with parts gathered as I get the money together, but I'd say the absolute highest I'd go would be €400, at a push, unless the price difference between that and a slightly lower end model was worth it.

    Thanks, dudes and dudettes.

A GTX 670 is probably your best bet then.

Is that 400 for everything? Do you need windows, monitor, be able to run games?

That's 400 for the graphics card. I really doubt I'll be playing games on it.

He must have thought you meant just a graphics card. Fill in the questionnaire in the sticky on this forum so that we can help you.

Sorry, didn't see that questionnaire! I DO mean just the graphics card. For the moment, this is really all I'm looking at, and my budget for the card is €400, maximum. Pretty sure all that makes sense, now.

    1. What is your budget? Nothing set in stone. Like I said, graphics card for €400 or so, which would be my maximum for parts in general.

    2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? Video editing/3D Modelling.

    3. Do you need a copy of Windows? No.

    4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? No, all still in use on another rig.

    5. Do you need a monitor? No.

5b. If no, what resolution is your current monitor and do you plan to upgrade in the near future? 1920x1080, No, no plan.

    6. Do you need any of these peripherals? No.

    7. Are you willing to try overclocking? No.

    8. How can you pay? Laser / that o2 thing.

    9. When are you purchasing? In a while? I dunno. When I find what I want?

What kind of 3d modelling are you doing?

Character and abstract. I'm hoping to pick up a copy of Realflow when I get the money for it, too. I use a lot of particle based effects.

You really don't need a 400 euro graphics card for that stuff! A 7750 is even overkill for it! I wouldn't even recommend a 400 graphics card to someone who is into gaming!

OK, then what WOULD you recommend?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 295 ✭✭joetoad

Probably just a 7750 or 7770 for around the 100 hundred. Its still overkill if your not into gaming, onboard graphics would even do or a 50 euro card. Its just my advice. Well probably better off with the 7770, again im only recommeding because i use Carrara and know there not intensive
