Christy Ring Cup 2013 worthless?

A motion passed in congress at the weekend to reduce the McCarthy Cup from the current 15 to 13 between 2014 to 2016. While the Ring winners in 2014 will be able to take part in a play-off to join the top tier, it appears the 2013 Christy Ring winners have nothing to play for. No play-off or any promotion possibility. Can the rules be changed like that. When the Ring draw was made late last year, it was made with a view the winner could choose to join the top tier.

I don't know if I would ever call winning any competition, let alone an intercounty competition, worthless

As Clareman said not worthless, however they have been devaluing the Ring and Rackard cups year on year since their inception. Apart from the promotion issue, they were once played in Croke Park as curtain raisers to the All Ireland Semi finals and were live on TV. Giving lower tier hurlers a real aim for the season ahead and a chance of exposure this has now been diminished and the attitude of the GAA seems to be to get them out of the way as early as possible in the summer and as low profile as possible. For shame!

If they're reducing the number of teams by two, does that not mean that three teams will go down to accommodate the one coming up? That's how they do it at club level.
