Different tyre sizes between front and rear axles

I have a FWD hatchback with 215/45/18s fitted, Toyos on the front and Falkens on the back. The Toyos are more worn, the left slightly more than the right, but since these were put on as part-worns by the previous owner, I'm not concerned, I'll get the tracking done anyways. I'll be moving to 225/40/18s as they're a more common size.

Can I change the front tyres to this size, while leaving the two rear tyres as they are so that I can get some more use from them or should I replace all four together?

Follow-up: woman at the fitters I went to said that if I did what I'm proposing, the car would fail the NCT. I've checked the NCT manual, but there's no mention of it there. As long as I keep the tyres the same on each axle, I should be okay.

Yes, you can have different sized tyres on front/rear.

    Nct manual:
Check that tyres on the same axle are of the same size, aspect ratio(Note 3 on next page) and type (i.e. cross-ply,
    radial-ply, run-flat, winter or summer).
    2. Check that the speed rating of each tyre is suitable for the maximum legal speed limit for the vehicle.
    3. Check that each tyre fitted on the vehicle has an E-mark or e-mark.

Your fine to do it that way.

If you go wider. The wider tires need to be on the back by law.

I'm going wider, 10mm wider. Apart from the law, is there any other reason why the wider tyres have to be on the back axle?

sorry thought you were just changing the profile.

No its a load of ****. Went 10 mm wider on the coupe and first thing I done was swap them to the front

    Love this,

She has no idea, but continues to talk through her hoop anyway

like you say, once you keep same size on each axle you'll be fine, my rears are about 60mm wider than the fronts.

I don't expect the car to look like BA's van. When the Falken's on the rear have a bit more wear on them, I'll replace them with 225/40s as well.
