Just wondering was anyone here paying attention to the competition? I went along to the Lionhearts vs Mexico Guererros there at the weekend and there were a few great displays of boxing. It was my first time seeing Joe Ward in action (in person that is) and to be honest I wasn't that overwhelmed. I'm always singing his praises when he comes up in conversation but on Firday he was absolutely wrecked by the fourth round, there was a serious lack of stamina there and as such his workrate left a lot to be desired in the fourth and fifth. The refs scored it 50-45 but I think nobody was in any doubt that he dropped one or two rounds to his opponent and that it was a close fight in general.

John Joe Nevin looked utterly dominant against his opponent who didn't land a glove on him until the third round.

Conrad Cummings of Belfast was fighting for the Mexicans and won a comprehensive victory, a very tenacious fighter indeed.

Lee Selby was also outstanding and was sticking his opponent at will. There's a touch of the Roy Jones about the way he fights but time will tell what he's capable of.

I'm with you on Ward. But, he gets the wins. Selby is a slick boxer. Very skillful.

    Anyone following this these days?

I went to British Lionhearts v Cuba Domadores there last night and all I can say is what a fabulous display of boxing. Needless to say the Cubans cleaned up with two KOs and two wide decisions. Stand out performances were Erislandy Savon who straight KOd his opponent and also Yasnier Toledo, a ridiculously talented young man who I hope to see in the Olympics in Rio this year. He was up against Sam Maxwell who he absolutely destroyed.

For the sake of £10 we had the best seats in the house, I absolutely love this format.

Two and three-time Irish Olympians Michael Conlan and Paddy Barnes
Michael Conlan and Paddy Barnes qualified for the Rio 2016 Olympics following a tense and dramatic night for Irish boxing in the World Series of Boxing (WSB) in Maiquetía, Venezuela in the early hours of this morning.
Barnes beat Finol Rivas on a split decision (49-45,49-45, 47-48) in the light-fly class in to book his ticket for the 31st Olympiad and Conlan beat Jose Diaz 49-46 across the board on a unanimous...

Does anybody know can Joe ward qualify through the world series of boxing route and if so when does he fight and how many more wins does he need.

Or do him and other Rio hopefulls have to wait to avail of qualifying tournaments later in the year. almost impossible to get information about the AIBA online their own website has not been updated nearly since London 2012

The WSB rankings are here: http://www.worldseriesboxing.com/preseason-rankings/
It seems that there are 1 or 2 spots available per division with points awarded with 5 for a UD win or KO and 4 for a SD win and 1 for a SD loss.

The rankings are based on the group phases, I don't know about the knockout phases.

It seems that Joe Ward hasn't had a fight this season so far.

Despite his 2 losses it looks like Conlon has benefitted from being involved in all 7 bouts he was eligible for. A lot of his rivals only had 5 or 6 fights.

Joe Ward isn't in WSB, he's now in APB and two more wins, which he should attain, will qualify him for Rio. David Oliver Joyce also needs two wins but his fights are trickier.

AIBA website is weak but individual WSB and APB sites, though far from perfect, are a lot better.

Just thinking, best case scenario we could have Barnes, Conlan, Taylor, Joyce, Ward and possibly another at the next Olympics, what a contingent that'd be like.

Being pedantic, best case we could have another 8 boxers qualify on top of that. But I get your point, we will likely have a very strong squad in Rio.
Strong performances from our Nations boxing team have become an expectation rather than a hope, and long may that continue.
