Recommend a decent (but cheap) tablet?

    Hi Folks,

we're looking to pick up a cheap but decent enough tablet. We are travelling in a few weeks time, and just don't want the hassle of bringing the laptop, although we will need to be able to browse the web, and possibly watch a video or two. But primarily it will be for web browsing and emailing.

We want to spend as little as possible (as this will only be used occasionally when we go away, and I don't want to be bringing anything of a high value with us just in case it gets damaged/stolen/lost). So budget is no more than €100.
And we are travelling in 2 weeks, so nothing that takes ages to arrive if possible.

    thanks!

Have a good think about how much you really want to spend. Chances are you say it's only for occasional use but you're most likely going to want to use it all the time once you get used to it.

I really don't want to spend more than that, as this particular tablet will only be used when travelling. From past experience, I don't want to have something of a high value with us on such occasions.

This is literally just for travelling so that we can maintain contact without having to pay a fortune on our phones (we travel outside of the EU a lot). Mainly it will be used just for killing time.

    Memup SlidePad 704CE

    Arnova 7i G3

Two for under a hundred euros.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,332 ✭✭✭tatli_lokma

    thanks pickarooney

of the two, which would you go for?
and do you know any shops that are selling them in Ireland for the same price, or is it only online you can get them?

ETA - I notice that the arnova one doesn't officially support google play. Is this a problem? will I need to install something to get around this? Not very techie minded :(

    cheers

so of the 3 available at powercity which would you recommend?
    SCROLL 7 ANDROID TABLET
ARNOVA 7 ANDROID 4 INTERNET TABLET
    or
GEMINI JOYTAB DUO 7 INTERNET TAB

and any good (and by good, of course I mean cheap) links to cases?

I would recommend spending a little more and getting this. Shipped from the Uk so you will easily have it in less than 2 weeks.

Which is strange because the seller is based in China

Quite possible. There are lots of other sellers in the UK that have it at a similar price, I just picked out the first one as an example.

With what? I just linked to a similar spec'd tablet to yours for cheaper to help the OP.

Listen mate I didn't see the link there. Not trying to compete with you just trying to help the lad out. Not everything's a competition ok?

I'm fully aware. I replied because you told me to go on. Don't try to blame me for your mistake, keep your pants on.

Anyways, OP I would recommend getting an Ainol branded tablet that is sourced from the UK, or to get one from China shipped via DHL since you need it soon. Have a look at Aliexpress, Focalprice etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 522 ✭✭✭gbob

Or if you want decent specs with gaming controls for €135.

Does the website you linked to sourced in the UK? I'm not familiar with the website, so sorry if that is a thick question!

And if I can't get the one you linked to, are any of the ones under €100 in powercity any good?

ARNOVA 7 ANDROID 4 INTERNET TABLET
    or
GEMINI JOYTAB DUO 7 INTERNET TAB

    anybody????

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,332 ✭✭✭tatli_lokma

Just noticed that even with DHL the Ainol tab takes 4-5 working days. Which with Good Friday and Easter Monday means I need to order it today to have a chance of delivery before the 6th - and even then I feel a bit nervous it won't arrive.

Anyone have experience of this website and how reliable their shipping is?
Might be better to just go with a powercity one that I can buy instore?

Advice? Aristotle, what do you reckon?

I have the Scroll II 7" and to be honest I'm not happy with it....except for work apps they work fine, everything else is meh.

Some apps are slow to load and crash frequently, the Wi-Fi isn't great. (Weirdly the only real reason I bought it was for work. That app never fails and net works fine for that...damn tablet making me do the job I'm paid for and not Angry Birds :( )

If you had the time I'd say consider this:
    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=TB-007-OT&emcs0=2&emcs1=Produktdetailseite&emcs2=TB-003-OT&emcs3=TB-007-OT

It was the Tablet I was gonna buy but it was out of stock when I went to purchase and I needed the tablet fairly quickly.

Spend €250 on a Nexus 7. Infinitely better than the options around €100 when it comes to value for money. It's just that good.

As I said in my OP, I don't want to spend more than €100 as this tablet will only be used when travelling. I have had an expensive laptop damaged and a phone stolen both in the course of travelling and it was a heartbreak trying to get the insurance to cough up. At least with a cheaper version I will be less worried about something happening to it.

If you want a reasonable Tablet for that kinda money, it will have to be Chinese, but it may take longer for delivery than you have...:(

So, try Amazon, or other UK stores, for one, you may pay a little more, but there is no prob with Customs, and it will usually arrive on time.

I have an earlier version of this Chinese Ployer, the Momo Bird, 1GB Ram, just single-core, but it is a great Tab, custom ROM on it, etc, no probs with WiFi, no Chinese apps, great IPS screen and big battery, and enough Internal storage not to need to worry, but can be expanded with external SD.

This is a dual core device, so much better, IMO.

Also, you can usually connect other devices, via host mode, for HD video, etc. and Mobile Data Dongles, which iPad can't do out of the box.

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ployer-Momo8-IPS-Tablet-Pre-Installed/dp/B0096DKGJW/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1364320109&sr=1-1

Good customer reviews for the seller.

I think Amazon will deliver free to Ireland too....It's around €117...

BTW, Aristotle's advice was and is very good and sound!!

Hope I don't get flamed for this but maybe you could pick up a Blackberry Playbook on adverts.ie for €100. I did. 64gb with possibility to output movies etc to an external tv. Android apps can be sideloaded on it with the latest firmware (no chance of bricking things). Extremely good build quality with a rubberised back and the front facing stereo speakers are fantastic so should be good for traveling.

I've been looking at this myself too as a start off tablet.
I'm presently using a HTC One X Android phone which is quite good so I'm worried I'll be disappointed with the tablet.

I have a Galaxy Nexus and a Note 10.1 and it was not much different on overall experience, def slowed but not the multiple times the price difference suggests.

Resolution is the only problem but still not that bad when actually using it.

    512MB Ram??....running JB???? 7-inch??

    I dunno......

my cheapo Chinese Ployer Momo Bird [9.7"] has more RAM, runs ICS CM9 Custom ROM, with a custom Recovery, has multiple USB and OTG connectors...

and can have Mobile Data Dongle connected, has a really good IPS screen, massive Battery, lasts 3 days with moderate use, can output HD movies via HDMI port.......

and has external SD slots, which take 32GB, with internal 8GB on-board...

It cost me about €130 from Amazon, about 9 months ago, Chinese seller, but no duty to pay, it was landed in UK, and arrived 3 days after order was placed......free delivery!!!

I think you could get the same now for well under €100, and for what I paid, you can easily get a dual-core model, with higher specs.....

I think this one is worth at least a look, I can vouch for my one, but it is an older model, and this has more...but seems a smaller screen??

I'm just weary of brands that I don't know. I was looking at archos but then I was told they can be quite buggy. I don't want a 7 inch, specifically 7.8/9 or an 8 inch.

I had a look at that one you posted, it looks very nice but like the nexus7 it only has a front facing camera which I don't get. I'm not going to be snap happy with the one I do get but if I wanted to take a picture I'd like it to have a camera on the back.

I find 7 is too small - narrow screens. 9/10 is too big so 8 is just nice. I like the size of the screen on the iPad mini - whereas on the Samsung 7 for example the screen starts about an inch in

I never use the camera on my ipad2. Its just easier to use a phone because of awkwardness of holding something as big a tablet while taking a photo,

The quality of the photo images is also very poor on the ipad2 so check the camera specs on any tablet you are thinking of buying.

Thanks for all the advice folks! In the end we took a spin around the larger retaillers - Harvey Norman, DID, currys, powercity. After comparing a few we went for this:
    http://www.prestigio.com/products/Tablet_PC/MultiPad/MultiPad_8.0_PRO_DUO/PMP5580C_DUO

It was €249 in Harvey Norman with €100 off (ex-display model but with full warranty) so €149 and we had €60 voucher so it came in at cost to us (out of pocket) €89. Not sure what the expert view of it is but so far we're quite happy with it. Image quality is good, as is responsiveness and battery life. All in all I think it will be good enough for our needs.

HDMI for outputing movies to your Telly!!

OTG for connecting other devices, maybe dongle for 3G??

Battery, 4700 mAh, smallish..for that screen, but adequate

Screen not IPS, but really OK, unless you are a gamer....

not sure if there are any Chinese left-overs still on there, it has Google Play??

Misticles I was going to aim this at the OP but it's probably even more relevant to yourself-

You can pick up an Archos 80 Cobalt tablet in Tesco for €140-

    http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/31/archos-80-cobalt-tablet/

I'd been looking around for one for a while and wasn't willing to spend €250 on a galaxy tab or €350 on an ipad (don't much care for apple tech anyway tbh!), but I didn't want to buy one of those crippled child friendly Archos and Asus tablets they have in Smyths toy stores for €100.

I'd been humming and hawing over the various options for a while as I don't much care for tablets either, it was more for my eight year old, but I wanted to get him something he could get maybe a year out of it at least.

I only went into Tesco yesterday just to pick up a loaf of bread, and came out with a tablet! :pac:

I have to say it's a fantastic little piece of kit, and having downloaded Kingsoft Office I can do all my editing of Word and Excel documents on the tablet and save them on Google drive for printing out later, or just send them directly to the printer with the Brother printer app.

It comes with Ice Cream Sandwich Android OS, and Archos have scrapped plans to release a Jelly Bean update, which tbh is completely unnecessary unless multiple users want their own profiles. If you're any way handy though with Android you can root the Cobalt and put a Jelly Bean custom rom on it, or even dual boot Ubuntu Linux on it if that floats your boat.

The one think I WILL say, is that at 1024x768, the screen res won't blow you away, we're talking a hell of a stretch from ipad retina display here, but for that you'll pony up an extra €200 at least, swings and roundabouts.

The other pain in the proverbial is that 8in sleeves are rare as hens teeth in bricks and mortar shops (they mostly cater for 7in and 10in tablets), but you should be able to pick one up online handy enough.

I still don't have much time for tablets as they are primarily a media consumption device, and certainly not something you could think about getting any serious work done on, but for reviewing documents and picking up e-mail, a bit of internet browsing, they're handy enough, and you won't go far wrong spending €140 on the Cobalt.

Yes Google play on there and can add a dongle so ideal for travelling as we can pick up a cheap 3g dongle and with the hdmi output we can watch movies through the hotel tv as you rightly say. I'm happy enough anyway. I know hardly normal are a bit over priced but with the fact we had a voucher it made it a good deal for us - and with time being a factor it was dead handy to be able to wall away with it and know we have it in time for travelling.

Ps have already downloaded the manual but thanks anyway. :)

The prestigio comes with a very nice leather sleeve! Was quite surprised by that little addition as it saved us another few quid. And it charges up nice and quick too. So all we had to fork out for was anti-virus which was €20 and we're all set :D

The prestigio comes with a very nice leather sleeve! Was quite surprised by that little addition as it saved us another few quid. And it charges up nice and quick too. So all we had to fork out for was anti-virus which was €20 and we're all set :D

Aye I went and tried a 7in filofax style cover on it alright, but no joy, I'm surprised you paid for the antivirus software though, I just downloaded Zoner antivirus free version, but there doesn't seem to be an app like ad block available that strips out the adverts from apps. I didn't want to have to go messing around with the hosts file but I loaded a few free classic literature e-books, languages and maths apps on it for himself and the inbuilt adverts are a bit of a minor nuisance on the screen.

Oh, I forgot to mention aswel that the tablet handles HD quality movies handy enough, and the sound through headphones from the jack is grand, I couldn't fault it anyway.

Oh and if you just want a tablet for facebook, well, it's fine for that too. The 2MP camera on the back is, well, dire, but the front 0.3MP camera on the front is just about acceptable for skype, which works grand on it too. There was an issue with the microphone not working, but Archos have released an update on their website to fix it as well as another few bugs it irons out like the hinky wireless that had a habit of turning itself on and off on a whim!

Theres no camera on the back of mine but that doesn't bother me much as I'm not a fan of using tablets for photos - find them too awkward, much prefer an actual camera. The front camera isn't bad for skype, which is all we'd really need it for.

The other pain in the proverbial is that 8in sleeves are rare as hens teeth in bricks and mortar shops (they mostly cater for 7in and 10in tablets), but you should be able to pick one up online handy enough.

Any chance of a free ad blocker there IP? Or does the avast above even have a setting where you could manually put in a list of adservers you want to block?

The best Ad blocker is AdAway...they took it off Play recently!!

and Google are taking down any ad blocking apps, as they break the Dev Distribution Agreement according to Google...

they have a point, of course, as Ads mean revenue for devs, who can then develop free software.

    AdAway can be got here:

    http://f-droid.org/repository/browse/?fdid=org.adaway

    Latest is V2.3

This will allow you to d/l the apk for AdAway, but you need to side-load:

By default as a security precaution, your Android phone won't let you download non-Google Play store applications, so make sure Unknown Sources is checked.

One a phones running Gingerbread do this by going to Settings - Applications, on an ICS phone go to Settings - Security.

The best way to get FOSS [Free and Open Source Software], including AdAway, and updates automatically, is to install F-Droid on your phone, which has loads of open source, free s/w.

    F-Droid Home:

    F-Droid Home page

    Android app:

    https://f-droid.org/FDroid.apk

Click to download, and if on your phone, install.....

irishpancake you legend! I thought it was just a compatibility issue that offered a crippled play market for tablets. I hadn't been aware they'd actually withdrawn it as adaway was available for my samsung galaxy mini running a cyanogenmod 9 rom I installed a while back, but your instructions are great for users that are fairly new to android modding too! :)
