I'm looking for a new car and the new Golf looks not too bad to me.

I'd love to know what you guys think about the two options below?

Which to go for, including the depreciation:

The Golf 1.4 TSI or the 1.6 TDI?
    Their specs. are
    140Bhp 1.4 Petrol, vs.
    105Bhp 1.6 Diesel.

My Milage is about 6000 Kms per annum petrol.

If you only do 6k km a year buy the petrol. Diesels are not designed for such tiny mileage. The petrol will probably prove more reliable when covering such a short distance.

Petrol is the way to go if your mileage is low, you need to be doing 10,000miles plus to get value of the diesel. Plus if you are doing short distance alot its better to stick with Petrol.

I'd have the petrol, but unfortunately, the current mania for diesel means the petrol may depreciate more than it should.

You would want to be doing a lot more than 10,000 miles to make a Diesel pay imo.
Anyway, petrol gets my vote for small miles also.

Just wondering in relation to all this, what kind of driving/mileage would warrent a diesel then, do about 15/17k miles a year myself mostly motorway bout 300 miles a week with some longer journeys at weekend, is that diesel worthy or is petrol still better?!?

6000kms/annum, presuming you drive every day and only do one trip home and back than your average spin would be 8km long, a diesel isn't designed for such short trips repeatedly.

I'd go petrol and enjoy the better engine, depreciation difference won't be huge as people are seeing the light regarding diesels me thinks.

The 1.6 diesel in them is dog slow too. Ruins the car completely. The slightly cheaper 1.4tsi has more power, better suspension and should prove light enough on petrol if driven properly.

    Thanks Lads.
I took a drive with the 1.6 TDI and she didn't blow the tyres off her, not that I'm looking for that any more. :)

I think I'll order the 1.4 since it it has the same low tax and fuel economy as the 1.6 with it's half cylinders switch off in low , and on paper goes pretty nifty (0-60=8.4secs).

I was going to buy one but I do a lot more mileage and didnt want to gamble on the economy but at 6k km a year it wont make much of a difference.

I have the 1.4 TSI ACT with DSG for about a year now and it's fantastic. My previous car was a Mark VI 1.6 TDI and economy not quite as good, but it is such a smooth, refined and free revving engine with lots of poke. Don't think I'd go back to diesel after it. DSG is the perfect gearbox for this engine!

Wasn't there a ford executive saying that 25K kms a year was what they calculated as a minimum for diesel ownership lately.
