volvo rear parking sensors

car is a 2004 volvo s80 with original manufacture parking sensors.

sometimes the parking sensors work perfectly but the sound might be a bit low and other times they just don't work at all but the radio still goes into reversing aid mode to say the sensors are on.

Is there a switch for this somewhere maybe or could there be loose wiring?

volvo can't give me an answer without taking the car for an hour and doing diagnostics and charging for the privilege of it so don't really want to ask them.

im very certain they are switched on since the radio changes.

    Any help appreciated

    Cheers !

Check with some local auto electrician. It does sound like a wiring issue or maybe you need to update some software. Any codes?

Does the car get dirty a lot? A thin layer of dirt and mine are useless.

no error codes or anything showing up anyway and they programmed a key to the car about a week and half ago and nothing was said.

it does just come and go from time to time for now

the car hasnt been washed since I got it so maybe I must get around to a jet wash on it and see.

would there be a volume control for it somewhere maybe ?

Tooth brush and wd40 is another method too to clean them out.

will give this a go too.... but I doubt it will do any good since this comes and go at different times after driving etc.

or maybe a volume control ?

Try the forums in the UK for people with the same issues.
but here is what i could find on VIDAS (old diag software)
The rear electronic module (REM) handles functions for:

    -alarm (certain functions)
    -locks (certain functions)
    -inclination sensor module (ISM)
-headlamp range adjustment position sensors (Bi-Xenon)
    -fuel level (Gasoline/Diesel)
    -fuel level (Bi-fuel)
    -shut-off valve (Bi-fuel)
    -diesel filter preheating (Diesel)
    -rear fog lamps
    -back-up lamp
    -stop lamps
    -high level stop lamps (V70/V70XC/XC70/XC90)
    -rear windshield wiper/washers (V70/V70XC/XC70/XC90)
    -rear demist
-electric folding rear head restraints (S60/S80)
    -cargo compartment lighting (S60/S80/XC90)
    -rear 12 V socket (V70/V70XC/XC70/XC90)
-parking assistance (applies only to the XC90 2003–2004 and S80 2004).

The control module is installed as a separate unit in the rear relay box. This is under the left-hand cargo compartment panel.

The rear electronic module (REM) communicates with components which are directly connected and also with other control modules and components via serial communication and the control area network (CAN).

The control module checks activations and input and output signals using an integrated diagnostic system A diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is stored if the control module detects an error. In certain cases the control module replaces the faulty signal with a substitute value.

Any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) are stored in the control module memory. This information can be read off using VIDA via the data link connector (DLC) in the car.

Lock and unlock the rear doors to check whether the rear electronic module (REM) is grounded and powered. The control module is powered and grounded if the doors lock and unlock. Another way to check whether the rear electronic module (REM) is powered and grounded is to switch on the rear fog lamp.

For further information, also see Signal specification.
on a related note, the diag software and cable(DiCe) are available on eBay for ~150 if you were so inclined.
haven't taken the plunge yet myself on this though.

I dont think id do the whole diagnostic software thing myself tbh.

so is there some kind of control box for the rear of the car in the back then that gets adjusted ?

    Hey,

When you open your boot lid hunker down and look towards the back of the back seat inside the boot. At the top of the boot almost under the rear window on the right hand side you will find an orange switch. This is the activation switch for the rear park sensors. Some times i find when you have had a full boot this switch can be turned off. This may also be damaged if your cable is hanging loose. This happened to me a while back. I have a 2001 s80 still going strong. If you need any other advise on the car give me a shout or check out volvoforums.co.uk the are an invaluable resource for all things volvo.

    Best of luck D

    Hi Kopparberg,

I was just thinking about your problem on my way to work, Have you checked your reversing switch? Are you getting your reverse lights when you engage reverse? If not you may have an issue here also. the sensors not working may be a red herring on a different issue.

thanks for that... haven't actually checked for reverse lights at all.

will check at lunch when im parking up. its automatic and reverse is being selected and car moves backwards alright

I couldn't find the orange switch in the boot either unfortunately.

parking sensors not making noise :/

just want to bump this to see if anyone has anymore ideas about this.

all the connections at the back arw fine.

brought to volvo fir diagnostics and they cant find anything, they were working in the work shop perfectly.

when I got it back the volvo guy told me to check behind the radio for anything aftermarket, there was nothing there.

since then the sensors have been working but sometimes completely silent and sometimes loud.

there are no warnings on the dash at all.

any suggestions as to what to do please ?

Take the thing to an auto sparks if there is an intermittent problem.

I've taken it to volvo and asked the guys in the garage and their all pretty stumped and they are volvo sensors built into the car from manufactur built into the loom.

    anyone you can recommend ?

the problem is that the sensors do work but the volume of them is all over the place
