Played inter club for the first time ever last year with Shannon in the Pierce Purcell. We were narrowly beaten in the Munster final by eventual all Ireland winners Ardagh. It's a unique experience even though at times during the play it is hard to enjoy it with the pressure you are under. Looking back on it though it was brilliant for my game on a personal level and I'd recommend it to anybody. I'm sure all the inter club competitions are the same no matter what club or what level you play at.

Well done dines. What was selection process like? What did the trials entail?

There will be a sheet posted on the men's notice board. Just sign up there and turn up on the night of the first trial. Trials are played in a foursomes format over 5-6 weeks in Shannon with different partners each time. It's a time consuming but worthwhile commitment to make. The squad will then play a trial at the course the first round will be on(Nenagh) and the team will be picked from that. Foursomes as a format is tough, you need to be steady and not make too many mistakes. That's essentially what's makes a good pairing. The fewest mistakes made will win the match more often then not. Best of luck with it, there'll be a moment if you manage to get into the team where you'll have to hit a shot on front of a crowd of people that you'll think oh s&@t! Why did I sign up for this? It'll all be ok in the end though hahaha

Definately *Purcell. 12 handicappers and up. There is an age limit though... pretty sure it's just 18, possibly 21?

Senior cup is any handicap, Junior cup is above 6, *Bruen is combination of 17 but both player must be at least off 6, can't recall what Barton is exactly but its very low anyway... Haven't a clue about Mixed Foursomes TBH

*Handicaps are from previous year. Not sure about others though...

what is the handicap division for pierce purcell?

Pierce Purcell goes off your lowest handicap from the previous calendar year. Five foursome pairings represent each club, comprised of minimum individual handicaps of 12 and minimum combined of 27.
I was off 11 playing in it last year and that was ok because my lowest in the previous year was 13.4.
Your current handicap is irrelevant, if you were no lower than 11.5 last year you are good to go

5 and 6 handicappers can play Junior Cup

I always thought it was 6... one of the lads I usually play matchplay with said he was hoping not to go below 5.5 throughout the year so he could play Junior cup. He could have went down another shot so! Would have ruled him out of Bruen though :/

Does anyone have any results from the first round of the Barton cup. Dun Laoghaire v Killiney in particular...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 552 ✭✭✭A New earth

Due to be played this morning but Killiney was closed for the weekend so it is on now on Monday 1st at 9am (3 matches in Killiney & 2 in DL). I hear that 1st April is the last date allowed so don't know what will happen if we can't play that day.

Are these not the "pre-qualifiers" between two clubs to determine who gets into the qualifying proper?
Ours was cancelled last week due to the snow, playing this Friday now (as above, has to be complete by the 1st)

If we are being pedantic is it not..."has to be completed"...

I think most people understood that I meant the 1st round of matches in the Barton cup, whatever they might be called. I don't think anyone from the 26 clubs involved in the "pre-qualifying" will be bothered whether its pre-qualifying or the 1st round!

Thanks A New Earth! Good luck next Monday!

    Preliminary round, actually.

Can never understand managers leaving it until the last weekend to play matches. The draws have been up a couple of months and any team that has made an effort are crazy leaving it until the last weekend and chance going out on the toss of a coin

    Preliminary round, actually.

Actually the GUI refers to it both as First Round and Preliminary round, if we are actually endeavoring to be so precise all of a sudden. (actually ;))

Not sure where that attitude is coming from...

I wasnt being pedantic at all actually, was just clarifying that it was still in the phases before the main event as our match was delayed and the vast majority of clubs are not playing in it yet (only 26 clubs are in this round) but hey, whatever!

No attitude, I just don't see why some people feel the need to constantly undermine others on here as if they are entitled. It's probably the reason why so many people become bored with this forum so quickly.. Even though if it were left without too much interference, this site could be as good as some of the other forums on here.

No, the matches in question are part of the preliminary round. Any mention of these matches as 'first round' is incorrect.

I'm with you on this, but I think a few clubs will have been stymied by the weather recently, Hopefully the lack of rain this week will allow the Preliminary round matches be played this week, as a toss of a coin seems such a waste.

I only discovered that when I checked their site to see what state the Barton Cup was actually at.
For future reference you can see all the results here including Round 1/Preliminary Round.

    Undermine? Seriously?
I asked a simple question because, to me, your post implied that the "full" event had started with all the clubs playing, and since my own club still has to play this limited round 1 I was getting concerned that perhaps we had missed a deadline. I respectfully suggest that you are seeing something that is just not there.

    <mod hat>
The forum has never been busier actually. Leaving a forum unmoderated quickly results in chaos.

I think moderating is best and most effective in moderation. I feel some mods (mod) can be a little quick to jump in and correct people unnecessarily. This may have been a case of me reading something into an "innocent" comment, but I know a good few people who are bored by this over moderated and therefore tame forum.

I think some of the characters of the forum are what make you come back, people with vastly different ideas or opinions to your own, but it seems that they get weeded out or watered down on this forum.

Ban pending I'm sure as I already know free speech isn't allowed as that is the reason I was given for being banned last time.

Unless we (I) am posting in bold it's not as a moderator it's my own personal opinion, which I'm entitled to, just as much as you or anyone else on here is.
of I correct something that I think is wrong it's as a fellow user, moderators don't have opinions on forums, they moderate them, users contribute.
we have plenty of characters on this forum, just ask FdP! ;-)

you call it "tame" but anyone who gave feedback on the forum thinks its well run (bar the usual suspects who thanked your post, 3 of which I guessed...)

there is no ban on free speech, it's just not something that you are entitled to hide behind on here, you certainly were not banned for it, rather breaking the charter.

finally, the appropriate place to have this discussion is via pm or on the feedback thread, not having a go in some totally unasked thread.

Only thanked this because I got a mention:o. I can understand how people feel that different opinions should be encouraged - I agree with that. But , people should also repect that 90 % on here are very serious about their golf - so it is not always conducive to joking and messing as it derails threads that are for the 90% of pure golfing fans.

There are off topic threads for "characters" and nobody is ever stopped from expressing a radical view once on topic.

Anyway - don't know how I got into this - Drive on.

nothing like leaving things until the last minute, hoping for some sun...

Match was originally set for March 10th ( but the Grange was closed ).
Do to the adverse weather conditions the GUI have granted a one week extension to all clubs competing in the preliminary round.

Does anyone have any results from the first round of the Barton cup. Dun Laoghaire v Killiney in particular...

    Back to your original question

    Dun Laoghaire won today 3.5/1.5

My partner & I lost 2/1 in Killiney but the other 2 DL pairings both won 3/2 there. DL won one home match (3/2 I think) and the 2nd home match was called in (I think DL were 1 or 2 up but officially a half)

No dig Taken, just someone said earlier::: why do clubs leave it so late to organise matches.
Best of Luck to Grange GC in the next round/rounds. Good team and very warm atmosphere for the tie, despite the Baltic conditions.

Woodenbridge beat Druids Heath in the Barton 3-2 (WB won one of their home matches and both away matches which is unusual for DH to give up such a big home advantage)

Do you know which nines we are likely to play on Sunday, I was up for a practice on Monday and we played upper and lower. Amazing set up and the course played well even with the greens recently being hollow tined.

Playing Middle/Upper. I was up there myself on Mon (3.30), found it tough - cold, windy, poleforked greens as you mentioned and course badly needs a few days rain (coming on Thursday I hear).

Played your place on Friday afternoon, tricky. Took me awhile to try & figure out the driving on 4th & 6th, good condition though. Was practicing mainly for the metro as only an away sub for Barton.

Yeah it all about position on 4 and 6, 4 is the longest 290 yards I've ever played especially when the wind is against which it usually is. I think the length of DL will catch some of our lads out especially when the wind is blowing.
