    Hi,

Can anyone give me a ballpark figure for a new clutch for a golf MkIV tdi?

I don't need the flywheel done (done recently enough) or anything else, just a new clutch plate.

    Cheers,
    M

    5 speed or 6 speed?

6 speed. Only replaced it 10k miles ago but slipping already. I did the flywheel at the time also. A friend fitted it as a favour so can't really complain about The job. Just going to replace the clutch plate.

    10k from a clutch, that's insane.

I think there was a problem from the start (since the fitting). The car was never driven hard. Only replaced clutch because the clutch release bearing went.

If you are just going to replace the two part kit (disc and pressure plate) you would be looking at a price of about €350-400 for parts and labour at a decent independent garage.

Was it an LUK clutch by any chance? Where did you get the parts the first time round?

Did you just replace the clutch disc before?

Getting 10K from a clutch, means something is wrong, either with the car or more likely, the driver! (No offence intended)

Yes it was an LUK clutch, sourced from a local supplier. It's the 130 bhp model. Should I install an updated clutch maybe? What brand should I use?

The car was never driven hard and I never had similar issues with other cars. As I said, the issue arose only after installation of new clutch. It was fine for the 80k miles I did on the old clutch.

LUK are one of the OE for that car, are you sure it was the right clutch kit? just cause it fits does not mean it is the right one.

As I mentioned, a good friend fitted it for me so he could well have fitted an incorrect clutch. He was doing me a big favour so I can't complain!

I have seen that happen with loads of LUK clutches. I think the pressure plate is generally at fault. If you got it from a local supplier you should try to get the old kit replaced under warranty. You won't get any compensation for labour but at least you might get replacement parts FOC.

To be honest, I don't want to go down that route. My friend sourced it and I don't want him to know that it's fecked ( since he did a lot of work on the car for little money). What other brand should I use instead?

You should be ok with the replacement LUK part to be honest unless you are very unlucky.

There are different clutches for them depending on whether a Sachs or LUK flywheel is fitted. Sachs sell a clutch to suit the LUK flywheel but the last one I got had an LUK clutch in the Sachs box so even if you try to avoid LUK you may not be able to.

As George said above, you need to mate the clutch kit to the DMF, LUK with LUK, Sachs with Sachs. While both companies say they have a version to suit the others, it is infact sachs putting an LUK in the box and vice versa. If the Clutch kit is wrong, could well be the DMF is wrong. You will need to get part numbers on everything fitted and have them checked that they are right.
