But how are they ripping people off? Its very easy to feel ripped off with the price of fuel these days.

The only rip off a station can have is if the pumps have been fiddled with i.e Says you got 5 litres but only delivered 4 litres which on the whole is fairly uncommon.

    What did they do?

Before i say let me just say i have had doubts bout this place for a while.

Went there yesterday got 10 worth of petrol and i only got 52.5 kilometres out of it when normally i will get 90 kilometres for 10. Like i said i had doubts bout this place before but had it confirmed in my eyes last night

Look i know bout the price of fuel. But this was being sold for 158.9 and i got 52.5 kilometres for 10€ later on i went to a different garage paid 161.9 and at the moment im up to 72 kilometres for 10€

or if they sell sub-standard or "washed" fuel.

Maybe in OP's case the ice-creams were too small as details are not forthcoming. I'm only guess like. Trading Standards tsk, tsk, tsk.

How familiar are you OP with the technicalities of fuel consumption? If all you're taking into account is distance covered in relation to how much you pay, you would want to be extremely careful who you are reporting and have all of your facts 100% straight.

    Seriously?

The €1.589 garage gave you about 6.3 litres for your €10. The €1.619 garage gave you 6.17 litres for your €10. Your talking about a difference of 130ml of fuel (Less than half a can of coke) and 19.5km in the difference.

You cannot use mileage, the price you paid or what your car tells you is the range to compare stations. The only comparison is the quantity of fuel dispensed.

Air temperature, head wind, fuel quality etc will all affect the economy of your car in a far greater manner. And judging by the cheaper fill, you probably bought lower quality fuel, hence the drop in range. Cheap for a reason!

    Just a thought:
If you know how much exactly fits in your tank, you could drive back there with an empty tank, fill up, and if the amount on the pump exceeds the volume of your tank - refuse paying for it.
I'd do it myself. It's just that I just changed cars and I am not yet sure how much I can fit in it. But you can pm me the location anyway.

Bring a fuel container of 5 litres instead? My tank is 45 litres in the book. But empty you'll fit about 40 to 42. There is about ~5 litres between the tank and the engine. As such using your car is not a reliable method. In fact its probably the most unreliable of all given the margin of error. Any filling station fiddling the pumps will only be in the ~5% area over read. Any more and its too obvious.

I know my car i have had it since brand new i never ever drive it hard its 6 years old and i have only did 50k i have been driving for 20 years and i am also unemployed so i only use the car when i need to.

Look i no you have to take alot of factors into account when driving but im sorry i think 52.5 kilometres is plain wrong when i usually get 90 kilometres

5L=7 Euro aren't worth the trouble as aren't 5% but

    =45%
    =around EUR25 would be.
Once in a driving job I brought in a petrol receipt that exceeded the volume of the tank and my boss refused reimbursing me. The receipt was real. It is just that I drove the car closer to empty than anyone else in this business.

Then why waste your time in posting

Why don't you do some research or ask some advice here on how to accurately measure fuel consumption before you go calling Revenue or Customs or someone on this business.

Your method of measuring fuel consumption is deeply flawed.

    So explain how its flawed

Putting a different amount of fuel in the car, in different locations, and then guessing at a € per km value?

    What's not flawed about that?

    So explain how its flawed
Because you could've burnt half your fuel sitting in traffic or drove her hard or even you got less for your tenner because of the price rising to name but a few not to mention wind speed, temp outside and use of air con etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,661 ✭✭✭Voodoomelon

If you're hell bent on reporting then, get a 5l jerry can, fill it up in the station and see if you actually get 5l.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,004 ✭✭✭ironclaw

    So explain how its flawed

By answering my post for a start. I never suggested you were a boy racer. My post didn't even allude to that fact. It was purely the maths behind your complaint which in my mind is groundless.

In a nutshell, your theoretical difference in fuel delivery was 130ml and the difference in distance was about 20km (12 miles!) Hardly phenomenal or groundbreaking. The reason? Probably cheap fuel and that includes branded stations. Its pretty well documented that the difference in distance between some main line garages can be large enough.

How are you measuring the range? Consumption? Your in car computer? You can't use the price you paid as a measurement or what your car told you had remaining.

Jaysus fella comes on asking for advice and attacks those who give it to him:D.

You have no proof what so ever you were ripped off only that you didn't get as far as you normally would.

    So you claim anyway

get a measured can and put 5l into it and see do it say 5l on the pump.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,004 ✭✭✭ironclaw

Assuming, from the book, your MPG is about 31.4. Thats 7.49L/100km. Assuming the exact same fuel:

The €1.589 garage gave you about 6.3 litres for your €10. Thats 84km.

The €1.619 garage gave you 6.17 litres for your €10. Thats 82km.

Absolutely negligible. So now we know 130ml of fuel gives your car 2km. But your 'missing' 20km. Why? Probably because the cheaper fuel was cheap. Good quality fuel will give you good MPG. Bad fuel can absolutely shatter your MPG.

The amount of variables is endless. Air temp, Air humidity, Fuel Quality, Traffic Vs Motorway, Speed etc etc. You'd literally have to drive the exact same route, in the exact same road conditions etc etc to even get close to a claim based on what your giving out about. By saving 0.1c on a litre of fuel you actually cost yourself about 25% in MPG.

Your argument is flawed beyond belief.

    /Thread.

    /Thread.

these, coupled with the fact that when you "stick a tenner in" you're never fully aware of how much fuel is already in the tank. Fuel gauges aren't deadly accurate, a reading of a quarter tank in a 1.2 cunto could be anywhere between 6-12 liters at a guess, so throwing a tenners worth (6 ish liters) in on 2 different occasions could leave you with 2 very different amounts of fuel.

please lock this thread. pure ignorance. man asks for help but slates anybody who offers sensible opinions that don't agree with him
