slight steam

I have lil problem...( well i wouldnt say problem, but i want "dig" a lot and get it sorted) with my current car, toyota avensis 15 years, old, '98, 1.8 petrol engine (7A-FE) , manual box, 5 doors liftback.

So, it did pass NCT, everything seems to be grand, however there is lil things what i want sorted.

It is smoky ... white smoke goes out from exhaust. not heavy like failed headgasket, no collant loss at all.

So, emissions on low revs are ok, on high revs (2800 ish) barely passed . something 0.29%

so full details:
Low Idle : CO 0.32 % (fail if above 0.5%), HC 309 ppm.
High Idle : CO 0.29 % (fail if above 0.30%). HC 60 ppm (fail if above 200ppm)
Lambda: 1.0 , engine temp 87 °C
I know, could be steam,( i doubt as I was driving for over an hour in city) goin up on knockmaroon hill in second gear, then i just speed up, an i saw a lot of white smoke behind me ... it did vanished pretty quickly , but it was quiet a lot. That thing car have since I bought , usually still have after motorway driving (like from blanch to kilcock scrapyard, and back)... havent done timing belt yet, due weather conditions :rolleyes: .

Car has aftermarket exhaust from catalytic converter, and i suspect middle silencer is blocked (car was parked for a year, with random startups for minute or two (thats from previous owner words)) , as it was rattle like mad a while ago, now cant hear rattle ,but car sound is more rough , and engine bay is very much covered with black deposits, like carbon .

Some times not easy start , when just about warm, like in morning drive for 3 min (drop the kid in school), and when have to go back, it barely starts, on 3rd attempt.

It was connected to techstream via tactrix, no faults shown.

Fuel consumption not good either, 10 -12 l/100 km, was expecting from lean burn engine something 7-8 tbh.

Any idea what could be problem ? I have my own ideas, but love to know other people opinion .
