So my laptop is on its last legs. Ive upped the Ram, clean up files regularly and keep everything on a nas just incase. Ive a drawing board clip intge corner of the screen to stop it whiting out.
Its a toshiba going on 8 (yes 8) years old and I said I would keep using it until I couldn't anymore.

But times are tight and weve a one year old. So im finding hard to justify spending money on a laptop.

Would any of ye buy a refurbished laptop? Or is it a bad idea?

    What kind of refurbished laptop?

There's a big difference between the refurbished laptops you find advertised in newspapers (Which would be little better than what you have) and say a refurbished laptop from Dell, HP or Lenovo's outlet (Which is as good as new).

You'll get a brand new Core i3 laptop for little over €300 these days.

    Thanks!

I'd hadn't really thought seriously about it, that's why I asked here. If I was to buy a refurbished/used model it would be from somewhere reputable.

@Torquay I hadn't seen anything along the lines of a core i3 around that price until your comment. It's funny when I know I need to buy one now, all I can see are thousand euro beasts and netbooks haha

Defo need to get my serious buying head on and have a few options buy the time my wife gets home from work.

Look for one that has windows 7 on it.
i just need to buy another 1gig ram ,to make it load, faster.
    Otherwise its great.
i got a demo ,laptop, 50 per cent off, normal price, in powercity, in 2009, no manual,hp, no os cds,no tv cable.
    IT s still working fine.

Few decent places to buy refurbished laptops and not spend too much.

You may need to use Parcel Motel on some of them.

    Asus Outlet
    Argos Outlet
    Tesco Outlet
    AcerDirect.co.uk

What's the story with Parcel Motel? They act as an English address for you?

Yep, as a UK address. Sometimes it's cheaper to ship stuff to the UK, and then use Parcel Motel. Some places don't ship to Ireland, but will to the UK.

If you've never used them before, your first two uses are free.

Just to follow up. As I had said, things are a bit tight. So I picked up the Acer C7 Chromebook in PC World. It cost me €249.

Its a grand little machine. Chrome OS is perfect for my wife, as she will pretty much just use it for browsing. It came with a 320g hdd and 2g Ram, so first chance I get I'm going to pick up a bit of ram.

Also since the 320g hdd was fairly redundant with ChromeOS, I did a bit of reading before I bought it and I've partitioned the drive and thrown a form of Ubuntu onto it. The Celeron 847 Sandybridge processor looks more than capable of running this.

I've only had a basic look at linux in the past, but I'm fairly happy so far.

    http://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=38

i think this is easier to use than ubuntu,LINUX
The menus, layout are more like windows .
Download chromium, vlc, player , winamp music player, from the menu, software centre, It should run faster than ubuntu 12 on an older laptop.

Needs a 5 gig partition on the drive.

    Thanks riclad.

I think at the minute all that is available for chromebooks is a version of ubuntu called Chrubuntu. I'm fairly happy with how it runs. i just need to find out which is the best photo editing software. Plus xbmc works great so I'm happy out.

Sorry , i should have made it clear,
i meant you could install mint 7 on the old laptop.
IT runs much faster than winxp, even in 1gig ram.
AND can be easily set up to dual boot ,alongside windows,
    in a 5gig partition.

ah ok sorry, the old laptop is dying a slow drawn out death. although i suppose leaving it permanently connected to telly it could be a useful little mediacentre while it chugs along to its last gasp. :)
