I'd recommend a dish with a Freesat box instead for a much more stable reception, you will get the majority of the same channels plus much cheaper, dish is around €50.

You can watch different channels on different tv's with a dish. All you need is a multi lnb.

and a separate satellite receiver at each TV whereas with an aerial setup no additional receiver is required other than the Saorview TV or STB, not forgetting the convenience of having all channels in one epg and one remote control.

nobody wants to install the aerial as you cannot guarantee reception in mullingar I have done alot of service calls in mullingar some parts are good and some are not so good. Best area is dublin rd and dalton park area

Plus AKAIK its no Longer possible to buy a 100 ELEMENT Group A Aerial, which is what you would need, as the smaller aerials are useless around here. Loads of good aerials were removed off chimneys and disposed of in the pre switch off panic, but those who left them in place and are living north of Mullingar seem to be fairing pretty well with the PSB Muxes from Brougher Mountain.

Having said that, I have seen rock solid reception in an area of Delvin on what could be described as a glorified coat hanger (an old old 18 element aerial with lots of rungs and deflector plate missing!!!) so it is really down to your height and clearance to the north/northwest.

My parents live 2 miles outside town on the Athlone road. They have a 30 year old, 4 foot tall aerial on top of a pole. Good saorview reception and alot of the freeview channels.

Everything working fine in the living room but in other rooms around the house the reception drops - I think they need to get some sort of signal amplifier in the attic.

was informed that a new short high gain aerial would work ??? any ideas

There are no magic aerials: if there isn't a usable signal at your location, nothing will work.

A 'very clear signal' like your neighbours have, might actually be just above the minimum the receiver can work with & could be well below the minimum recommended level, which includes an extra margin to help cope with normal day to day fluctuations in signal 'in the air'.

Only way to be sure of levels is with proper test kit but, as you say, the people who have this aren't interested . . .

Thanks Peter , but will the new high gain aerial pick up the same single % as one of the old long type aerials

What make & model aerial is it?

I know of one with this description from its manufacturer:
Wideband loop Yagi aerial with F connector.
The original design . . . enables a particular directivity (with the
    maximum reduction in interference)
    and maximum gain comparable with
    an aerial twice its length.

    Never actually seen one installed.
