I prefer the US Zelda console colour, I think that cover was on the European consoles. I got the US one myself when they released Phantom Hourglass.

I think the gold one was released here too. I actually quite like the baby blue, I've never changed a DS Shell but I do recall one of the regular posters here saying it was bit of bitch. Best of luck, let us know how it goes.

Mines been marked as dispatched, though coming from China it'll no doubt take an age to get here

No idea, never even opened a DSl or Wii before! Nintendo tend to use a tri-wing is that the one you mean?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,077 ✭✭✭safetyboy

yeah, I have a tri-wing here from when i hard modded the wii a few years back. seems most cases come with the tri-wing so maybe its bundled in?

Just checked my ds lite and it is indeed a tri wing screwdriver you'll need.

Let me know how easy/hard it is to replace the case. Might get the pokemon one myself and a broke DS to try it on. Wouldn't use my current one as its the nice cobalt blue one.

Will do. I'll more than likely show pics of the job similar to the PSP case replacements I've done before

Gold Wii U for one of the Zelda's would ensure a quicker purchase from me at least...

A bit of a bump, but for anyone wondering what these are like, I fit mine today. I'd an old bruised & battered DS Lite here which someone gave me. It took a fall, & the right hinge was smashed. Turns out the top screen ribbon cable was damaged too, so I needed a replacement screen, which I got from ebay for €10 or so.

Fitted the whole lot today, pretty happy with how it turned out. I need to replace the bottom touchscreen which has a huge dead zone in the bottom left corner, & I need to buy the inner hinge for the right hand side which was missing as part of the fall. But yeah, it looks nice

    Take broken old DS Lite

    Take replacement shell from ebay

    2po8x1v.jpg

    Squash them together

    And all going well..

...you should have a DS Lite with a new lease of life

That looks really well, did it take long to do?

Hard to say as I done it in two halves, I'd say about 90 mins or so in total as it was the first time I'd ever repaired a DS Lite. The quality of the replacement shell isn't quite up to the original Ninty one as you'd expect with these cheap clones, but if it's a broken hinge scenario then it's definitely worthwhile

I've done a couple of DSlite rehomings and I found them to be a complete pig to install.
Nintendo did an amazing job packing all that gaming goodness inside a sleek case.
The quality is variable, as you've said , best thing is to check the other buyer reviews on the site, Chinese sites are pretty good for this. That'll give you the info on the quality of the casing.
    Don't throw anything away!
I bought one, supposedly complete replacement shell, with buttons, hinges everything. Still had to fish the old one from the bin to recover several screws and springs.

It is a bit awkward in places, but take your time with it & keep track of everything & you'll be grand. There's loads of tutorial videos about how to do it too which go through it step by step

    Sticky tape
Once I started to use it to help hold components in while I was trying to assemble the infernal thing, things got easier.

    That looks great man!

For those who have a broken top screen, don't bin your DS lite, give this a go.

It's actually a really nice system. Good alternative to a SP AGS101 if you dont want to drop the coinage but want a backlit screen.

I didn't actually think it worked without both screens connected

Yeah, from what I've read you need to bridge two solder points to fool the DS into thinking there's a top screen attached.

Still work grand for me though when I removed the top screen ribbon cable

All we need is someone to come up with a custom case to allow you to show off the faux-101 to everyone.
Imagine the uproar on the Nintendo forum, taking ancient DS Lites and turning them into uber-GBA's!

Am I right in thinking replacing the case would fix the current DS Lite at home which has a cracked hinge that doesn't click at an angle? Display is still working 100%.

Yeah if the hinge is broken, these replacement cases are an excellent way of bringing a DS back from the dead. Depending on how it's broke, you might need the plastic barrel for the right hand side hinge too as that didn't come with the new case
