Doubt that had an impact on the carding decision, nasty fall though

I never intended to imply that it had an impact.

But it won't be pink under a spoiler...

Saw he was a DNF but didn't realise he'd crashed. Hope he's up and about quickly - getting that pro contract meant a lot to him (although perhaps a spell off the bike for a while may do him some good in the long run)

On the carding issue, I can only presume it is as a result if timing and that the proposals had to be made before the Worlds. It's a real shame as he has struggled along on a shoestring, although hopefully this year's results will count going forward

    That blog post is here

Got a photo taken with him last week (or was it the week before?..) and he's very nice and had loads of time for everyone. Wish him the best and a speedy recovery.

Talk about highs and lows, that man is made of steel , and hope he is looked after financially by his team whilst off the bike

Merged with yesterday's thread on carding (and title changed to make it more generic given there were 2 news stories about him yesterday)

Seems odd that I recognise more people from the bottom of the list than the top.
    Cycling Ireland

    €40,000

    James Brown

    Colin Lynch

    Mark Rohan

    Catherine Walsh

    €20,000

    Andrew Fitzgerald

    Katie George Dunlevy

    Martyn Irvine

    Enda Smyth

    Caroline Ryan

    €12,000

    Eoin Mullen

All but 3 of the funded cyclist are paralympians.
Denying Martyn and Caroline podium funding is nothing short of a disgrace. (as is denying Ryan Mullen funding after his silver in the European TT champs).
I've said it before but the ISC simply don't understand cycling.....

    Get well soon Martyn

In fairness, I don't think it's just cycling they don't understand. Fionnuala Britton won back to back European cross country titles and was third in the European indoors a couple of weeks ago and she's only in the second tier. Both herself and Irvine would have every reason to feel aggrieved.

The ISC have a ridiculous obsession with the Olympics, I think. It's a great sports event but it's not the be all and end all of sport.

Martyn Irvine is back racing next week in the Tour of Portugal

By all accounts he seems to have recovered well from his injuries, although I doubt he'll be contesting any of the stages next week. I suspect his main aim will be to get round

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,907 ✭✭✭pprendeville

I spoke to him out in Dunboyne 2 weeks ago. Saw him in the United Healthcare kit and I met his Dad up in Newry as he took our wheels in the spares car so I didn't feel like too much of an ejit going over to him having not met him before. That seems to be his aim alright, just to get the fitness back and racing in his legs. Very nice fella. Hope he recovers fully and gets back to winning ways.

Back focussing on the track, having won national titles in the pursuit and scratch races a couple of weeks ago he raced again in Belgium last week

The track season is about to start in earnest and I think Martyn will be looking towards next year and the World Championships in Colombia and then the Commonwealth Games where I'm guessing he'll be going for the Scratch, Pursuit, Team Pursuit and Points races

he doesnt have full power back yet, should do next year, hence not being able to do the 1km tt at the track nationals, his hip would have cost him a second or 2 during standing start and possibly risk injury

looks likes hes getting the form back steadily

International Belgian Open 6/9/2013 , scratch race 10th (Mark Cavendish got 2nd), pursuit 5th

    Aigle 3 Day* 3/10/2013 , scratch race 4th

*Eoin Mullen also did well in the Sprint with a new 200mm PB, no official results for that on UCI website yet

Another heavy crash last night on the first day of the Gent 6 day event

Hopefully it's not as bad as originally feared and with a bit of luck he'll be back on the bike before too long

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,450 ✭✭✭Harrybelafonte

F'kin hell, not again. Anyone got streaming for Gent actually? I can't find any.

ah Jesus not again. Fingers crossed he's not badly injured.

I've seen a tweet a few minutes ago suggesting heavy bruising (the track doctor originally feared a broken femur). It's a tight circuit (166m) and with 26 riders on it at any one time I suspect it's a bit hairy at times. He actually came down with his team mate who looks like he's going to ride the rest of the event with another rider who lost his partner (to a broken collarbone)

    No streaming for this event

EDIT - Report on Day 1 here

Martyn Irvine named BBC Sport Northern Ireland Sports Personality of the year

A World Championship Gold, a silver, a World Cup gold and a European Championship Bronze - 4 medals in 4 separate events isn't bad going really

Well done Martyn on a fantastic year - hopefully bigger and better things await in 2014
