    Hi guys
Ordered a product from the states that came to $99.99 plus $9.99 shipping.
Imagine my suprise when mister ups knocks at my door with a bill for €52.48

    Vat was €34.64
    Charges €14.50
    Vat on the above €3.34

Can someone tell me how on earth is that calculated?
It's more then 50% of the whole item

I refused delivery and he said he be back tomorrow.

VAT is calculated on the customs value, not what you paid. Customs value is the contents value in Ireland plus the cost of shipping. They appear to have valued your package at €150.60. The €14.50 + VAT is UPS' admin charge for paying customs on your behalf.

You're lucky, at least you knew about the charges. I had sold on a package before Fedex sent me a bill for paying a customs charge. It turned out there was no charge due but Fedex wanted me to pay them then claim a HMRC refund.
After weeks of calls and letters I told them to take a run and jump.

How can they have a value that's different to what I paid?
The item was a mophie phone cover that can only be got in the states.
The invoice they sent me clearly shows item value $99.99 that's some exchange rate there using

You could see if UPS can get the item reassessed, but don't raise your hopes. I reckon the minimum you will be paying is €40 so I guess it depends how much you're willing to fight for 14 Euro and how quickly you need the package (reassessment will take time).

    Get that charge reviewed OP

    Duty -Nil
    VAT - 19.54 Euros based on 23%rate
    UPS admin/handling fee 14.50 Euros

Many items I get from china have invoices clearly showing the value as $10, customs don't believe it though, so this might be the case.

Have you a picture of this phone cover?

I was just wondering what the customs man saw, and if it looked more expensive than the stated value.

No sure it's only weighing 50 grams and the box is the height of 2 DVDs.
