Getting a fiesta titanium diesel. I just happened to click onto English website and saw that a lot of the bit I was going to add as extra options are standard in the English models and have rakes more stuff included as standard. Assuming they gave me the same trade in value ( I doubt it) but it would work out at 2000 cheaper and get far more stuff in it. What's the catch. Is the vrt crippling to bring it over the border or what

Isn't there a vat implication too?

Hi TrueBloodFan, I bought a car up north about 2 weeks ago and just had it VRT'd, advantage I found was as you mentioned the general trim levels are better and on the car itself you generally are making a considerable saving(roughly 2k in my case), however be aware that Revenue calculate the VRT through OMSP(open market selling price), the VRT figure you are quoted online is generally correct, and the process of doing it involves no more than a visit to your local NCT centre with a chassis number/odometer check, if you find the VRT figure questionable you can later appeal it after it has been paid, my advice would be to sell privately here and compile few examples that you can view in the one day, in short it can be well worth the perceived "hassle"...

If the car is less than 6 months old or has less than 6k km on the clock then it is subject to VAT as well as VRT down here.

I think if you are buying a brand new car then it might be possible to buy it at the pre VAT price if exporting it to the South and pay the VAT on it down here but not entirely sure around this process or even if it is a runner.

Yes you can buy for export VAT free but you then pay it here at our rates on the invoice value of the car. You then pay vrt based on revenue valuation. You do not need to be vat registered for this.
Many dealers dont want to deal with the vat free sale and will swear to you that it is not possible and that you must pay the vat and claim it back once you pay irish vat. You can also do it that way but should not be necessary.
Overall though, I feel you would be better off importing a car over 6 months old to avoid the vat issue altogether.

im getting a quote of about 3000 vrt, i never knew about the vat side of things. ive now heard that they will also charge vrt on every extra down here that comes as standard up there. argh theyre deliberately making things impossible. so theres no way of knowing what final price would be

It is not very common that they check the extra's on the car, usually that will be done if the car in question is rare/exceeding a certain value, mine was just a odometer/chassis no check and it is very much loaded with extra's:-p!

and how did you get on with the vat side of things? . how is that calculated?

To be honest it has been this way for some time, if it was cheaper to buy a brand new car in the North or UK then we would all be buying them there.

BTW they can run the car's VIN through a database these days and it will tell them exactly what extras from the factory were fitted. Not just on high end cars either. And they only charge VRT on extras if the car is 4 years old or newer.

I don't like the vagueness of not knowing exactly what the final cost would be so its looking like ill be buying down here after all. At least when it's bought it's bought there's no guesswork involved. Sigh I really wanted those extras :(
