I'm going travelling in South America and have about 9 days to play around with in Rio. Does anybody know any places nearby (bus not plane distance) that would be worth seeing or staying in for a few days?

You can go to Buzios, Angra dos Reis and Paraty, beautiful places not far from Rio, take a bus and you'll be there in couple of hours.

You can get more info here - http://www.tripadvisor.com/Tourism-g303488-State_of_Rio_de_Janeiro-Vacations.html

Those places are very quiet compared to Rio, so if you aren't a fan of the frenzy madness of Rio, get a break and go to Angra..

Enjoy, and don't forget your sunscreen!

you could go to Ilha grande which is about 3 hours from Rio, from there its a hour or two to Paraty and then theres a place called trindade which is about 40 mins from Paraty its one of the coolest places I've ever been

Thanks guys! Checked our itinerary for a tour we're doing after Rio and we'll be hitting Ilha Grande along the way. Just googled some pictures of trindade - SOLD! Looks amazing!

Another recommendation for trindade. I took a day trip there from paratay, after 20 mins headed back, collected my bags and spent the next two weeks there.
