How do you chose what car to get?

    Hi
Problems with my car so looking to change but have no idea about cars.
Current car is a Saab 9-3 2.2 diesel and I do about 750km per week.
Might get a few grand trade-in and looking to spend around €10-15k
Would quite like to get something bit sporty/2 doors/coupe or is that unreasonable considering the mileage I do?
(Is it still call mileage even though we use km?)
Have looked at CBG.ie/Autotrader but don't know what are most important factors: mileage, fuel type/ engine size, look?
Don't really have time to do loads of test drives!
    Any ideas would be great.

Getting something sporty isn't unreasonable, but it's going to cut down the options of what's available, and either leave you in something small, expensive, or high mileage.

With your weekly mileage, I wouldn't even consider petrol - you are a prime candidate for diesel.

http://www.carzone.ie/search/Peugeot/407/BELLAGIO/201246211028827/advert?channel=CARS looks good and should be comfortable for your mileage. Private sale though so can't trade in, and the 407 isn't renowned for it's reliability.

http://www.carzone.ie/search/Peugeot/407/SV-2.7-C/4913292990779090/advert?channel=CARS seems like a bargain for that price, but tax is €1,200 a year.

Are you trying to keep running costs low and not bothered about performance, or is it all about the drive and to hell with the costs?

Under the new regime, the annual motor tax on it is €2,350

    Under the old regime €1,391

Might that be a pre 1 July car which continues to be taxed on old system?

The basis of assessment (BOA) is the vehicle detail which facilitates the calculation of the appropriate motor tax fee, e.g. engine capacity or CO2 emissions for private cars, weight for goods vehicles. The BOA for the vehicle details entered is CO2 EMISSIONS

The rates of taxation are as follows:
Tax Band Annual Half Year Quarter Year Arrears (Per Month)
    191 - 225 1200 666 339 100.00

The reg is early enough to be engine size, but it's obviously a reserved number (or a real fluke). Cut and pasted the info above from Motortax.ie where you can look up the road tax rates based on a reg number.

Info I have from 2008 for the 2.7 SV Auto is 226g, so it should be in the top group according to that info, but the Government says different.

If OP needs a diesel and wants a nice coupe, E92 is a good choice for sure.

One of these is going to have to give! In answer to your initial question, I make a list of all the cars that can do everything I need them to do and then decide largely on the basis of the test drive.

    to hell with any costs

To hell with any costs http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/4532752 (pity about the milage) or if you can get the VRT right this might be worth driving over the border if you can get it in budget http://www.usedcarsni.com/107789394
