Toyota Prius Recall - Just received the letter.

We just received a letter advising of a recall on our 08 Prius.

If you own a second-hand Prius, it might be worth contacting Toyota / a main dealer and checking if it's subject to a recall too. They're pretty serious issues, even if they haven't caused any accidents to date.

    To quote from the letter:

    Issues to be addressed:
In the hybrid system of the subject vehicles, there is an electrically driven water pump assembly which circulates coolant through the hybrid components, including the inverter assembly, to provide cooling. There is a possibility that the coil wire of the electric motor installed in the water pump may have been scratched during the coiling manufacturing process at a supplier. In limited instances, a short circuit occurs between adjacent coil wires, resulting in a blown fuse for the electrical power supply circuit, causing the hybrid system to stop while the vehicle is being driven.
On certain Toyota vehicles equipped with Electric Motor assisted Power Steering, there might be a possibility that due to insufficient hardness of the extension shaft the splines which connect the extension shaft to the steering gearbox may deform, develop an increased backlash and eventually wear out over time, which could result in loss of steering ability. This might happen if teh steering wheel is frequently and forcefully turned to the full-lock position while driving at slow speed

Obviously, as it's a recall notice, they are taking care of these issues without any charge, but they sound serious enough!
