The current car is the first I have had with front and rear sensors, and having derided them as a gimmick for year, now I could not imagine driving without them. It's amazing how quickly you become dependent on them, I sometimes find myself reversing almost entirely on the audible tone rather than visuals, BUT, someday they are not going to work, and the first I will know if it is when I stuff the front or rear of the car. Damn you technology!!!!

Well, my sister had those on her Sharan. She relied on them so much that when the electronics failed in her car without spotting it, she reversed straight into a big piece of concrete she'd have seen otherwise.

Wait until you try park assist, it's amazing watching it do all the steering.

Nissan say they are bringing out completely self parking by 2015, you pull up at supermarket door and it will go find a space, then you tell it to pick you up on your smart phone. They have successfully demonstrated it.

The only think stopping completely self driving cars is the manufacturer lawyers themselves, seemingly they don't want to risk lawsuits, but Google have successfully tested their converted auto driving Prius for over 300,000 miles with no incidents what so ever.

Wouldn't it be really nice to put the car into autopilot and take a snooze on the way to/from work ?

Was thinking more of driving into town and the car driving me home while I sit in the back eating Chips and cheese.

I would still need the inane chatter for my ride home though, so the car should also talk. And it should sound like Kit.

"I wouldn't recommend eating those chips, MrDerp, they're very fattening"

"Shut the f**k up and drive Kit! ... w**ker"

Seems some driver aids have taken the skill out of driving. Learnt to parallel park during my lessons, not a requirement in the test, and even though I have parking sensors now, I dont rely on them 100%

the parking sensors are great but they do have blind spots, the auto drive cars would have a lot more sensors including radar and laser, to eliminate these blind spots.

    Check this out

I never rely on parking sensors, knowing how much technology can fail at most un-wanted moment, it's better keep a lock at back and braking. I think it's better not to be as close as possible to wall/car but be safe that you aren't going to hit something.
I mean if I have choice:

    a) Rely on parking sensors to park as close as possible to object behind me.
    or
    b) Look out and park whenever you feel it's close enough.

I would obviously go with B, if parking sensors fail - you are ****ed. I wonder did this happen to anyone? I mean not wall but hit say a car or something?

I'm kind hoping you're grand as long as you're in the back.

Current parking sensors are meant to be used as aids, not to be relied on completely, but the next generation won't be anything like what we've ever seen.

Any failure and the system will tell you and you take over, simple as that.

Remember Google has clocked up over 300,000 accident free miles with their self driving cars.

i have parking sensors on my 15 years old toyota. it is liftback, and cant really see what is behind. I've fitted parking sensors, i not relay to technology, always using mirrors and windows to see what is behind car, but that youke paid off already. other night, was going to work, was reversing from drive way, looked in mirrors, didnt see anything, and went slowly out, suddenly parking sensor start roaring, i immediately pressed brakes, thought might somebody stood behind car, but when looked more accurate, my wifes car (black color) was nearly at the front driveway, ... usual female way parked .... so, if not sensors (cost 37 euro) , id be on some bill to fix my wifes 2010 polo rear left panel.

On my 2006 Civic, the parking sensors get confused in heavy rain because water gets into the sensors and they stick in the on position. Could be better...

I never had issues with sensors in My old 2003 A4 in the rain nor does my brother in his A6. I wish I had them for the Prius.

I added reversing camera to my car. That along with sensors makes it pretty fool proof

Mercedes had the right idea with their 2 little antennae on the old S-Class.
