People skills to me means that you come across as a decent person and are able to communicate properly with someone, if you can't manage that then you're fooked.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,041 ✭✭✭Seachmall

If you don't have people skills you simply lie.

Counter-intuitively by lying you display people skills as knowing when and how to lie plays a fundamental role in human interaction.

So you're not technically lying because the lie itself becomes the truth.

    Right?

If we were to push the envelope then I would say we should touch base about this at a later date before moving forward.

You won't get far without people skills. You really need to sell the idea that you love everybody and respect everybody's opinion and you will fit in with any situation.

If you show any sort of uniqueness or personality, you will fail in this regard.

You can either be yourself not fit into a work environment, or you can conform and be a brainless pleb.

Tell 'em you've a gun under the table aimed at their nether regions and move to the next question

Try going for a job that's solitary and involves little to no people skills. I was making progress in getting a job as a train driver before CIE had a recruitment freeze. At interview they told me that they were surprised I wanted the job because I am outgoing and have good "people skills" whereas the job involves working alone for hours.

So ya, be a train driver. Or a crane operator.

People skills means you can get on well with people and have the social intelligence to get things done without politics getting in the way. You can read people well and understand their motivations and intentions. Knowing this you can Taylor your approach in achieving goals without causing other people to be significant obstacles.

If you don't have people skills then you'll need to lie about it.

Here are some buzzwords and phrases: "team work, group synergies, breakdown knowledge silos, open communication
excellent communication skills, core competencies, customer facing".

You'll then get the job, and soon realise that the best way to advance your career is to crush these other people. This requires another set of much more nuanced skills that they tend not to ask about in interviews.

I always hate the fact you have to play along with HR bull****.

    E.G. a recent CV I saw:
"I used my initiative to forecast stock levels for functions preventing re-stocking mid-shift and therefore improving efficiency."

    In my job it means:

    - listening to endless shi*e talk about soap operas, reality shows and cooking.

    - pretending to give a shi* about the cretins I work with and their million kids, grandkids and dogs.

    - practically grovelling when I actually have to ask them to do any, like, WORK.

    - prostrating myself in gratitude afterwards if they actually do the work.

The old initiative thing can be a double-edged sword for a company. They want to hire someone who shows a bit of initiative, but it's this same initiative that leads the new employee to quickly discover ways to slack off in work.

So it might start by taking 10 minutes extra for lunch, but quickly leads to putting a cardboard cutout of yourself behind your desk while you go to the pub for the afternoon.

No harm sending in a CV! that's what I did. Got called almost immediately for aptitude testing. You have to start as a "station operative" to get a foot in, but if you show the desire and right aptitude you'll be put forward for the train driving course once you're in.

I really doubt that they'll be recruiting in CIE for a long time though. Also, they have a back supply of candidates for the station op jobs, all tested, interviewed and medicalled ready to go when they get a call to say there's a job.

Tell them you have people skills

Smile lots and talk about team dynamics and how energising you find it

Realise that If you can sell this to them and get the job, then the biggest tosser with the least people skills usually the one who ends up running things

    Just smile lots.....,

In the history of interviews, surely no one has replied "no, I'm a lone wolf, a maverick who doesnt play by the rules, who bucks against authority and gets the job done on my own terms"

Then apply for jobs that are more suited to working on your own

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

I did somthing similar when I was younger, I was doing a mock interview as part of a fas course I was doing..

She asked Do you like working with other people, ie a team player

my answer: No, I'd rather be left alone to work by myself..

I didnt get a very good result :o:o

Wow, things have changed. When I was finished my leaving cert (~5 years ago) I emailed them to see if there was any part time work going around any of the stations (ticket vending ect). Few days later I got a call asking could I turn up for a course, I asked what course and the lady said, "train driving, you have the job if you want it but you have to take the course, we can't let you go straight into it ". So there I was , only 18 and offered what seemed like a nice job, but i declined to go to college :(.

The people skills thing essentially boils down to whether or not you're good at manipulating people without anyone knowing what you're at

You're about 50 years too late on the scene to apply to drive choo-choos.
