Cant find it in the instructions.
I want to use the garmin to record the runs and cycling seperately. When I complete the run I switched it off and back on held reset and it deleted the run......... the weekend before it worked no bother??? Nothing more annoying then deleting an activity. I dont want to have to buy a Garmin watch. any help much appreciated.

Don't have the 800. use the 500 instead, but I can't see what the issue would be. The computer doesn't 'know' what activity you are doing. Simply treat it the exact same as when doing a cycle (I assume you mean running outdoors!).

Just rereadin gyou OP, I think you mean a duathalon type activity. You need to stop the 1st activity and hold the reset to save that activity. When the save is done simply start a new activity.

When uploading to Strava etc you can split the file into different sections and flag as different

The simpliest solution is to stop wasting our time running and get back on your bike!!!!

    Are you sure it's deleted?
I use a Garmin 500 for both running and cycling. When I'm finished the activity, I press 'stop', then hold down reset for 3s ('Resetting in 3... 2... 1') and it stores that activity and the Garmin is ready (00:00:00) for the next activity. You need to press 'stop' even if it's already auto-paused. I would assume the 800 works in a similar way?
There should be no need to power the unit off and back on.

I hate accidental deletes too - I've become a bit overly obsessed with my Strava data...

At the end of a cycle or run. Press the start/Stop button. then Press and Hold the Lap button for 3 seconds. this will save the activity.

Go for a cycle. Upload the activity and mark as a "Cycle".

    Thanks gents.
This is what I have been doing (pressing stop and reseting but the activity isnt showing up in the history) its deleting instead.....
My heads wrecked then after loosing the activity.
    ????????

Leroy I'm trying to get fitter and lighter to improve the cycling.

As an alternative you could leave the garmin operating for the whole activity and don't use auto lap but press lap at the end of the run then end of cycle etc. then use garmin base camp software on your computer to split the activity up later into its components. Even if you don't use the lap button and you are can work out where your run finished and cycle started by speed, say, you can split the activity.
I have the same sort of issue trying to use a garmin fr70 watch and foot pod for a duathlon run then an edge 500 for the cycle and hope the watch works again for the last run with an hrm for all 3 legs. The watch froze last time as I didn't put it in race mode and the start was delayed. I left the edge 500 on the bike and left auto power down off.
Let us know how you get on or if anyone has any other solutions.

Ashleey yes I'm driving to different areas to do each section so would be easy to split up.
I spent a fortune on the 800 and would prefer not to buy a watch but im looking at that as an option.
Last week it worked fine and no problems so cant understand what the difference was this week??
I presume the HRM strap works for both watch and edge unit.

Yes. The hrm works with both and the sensors broadcast rather than use 2 way comms so in principle it should all work smoothly.
My risk is that I will take off my runners and stop the watch and leave it on my wrist and then cycle and hope that the watch reconnects again for the second run when I restart. It's not the end of the world though as by that stage I can barely focus o the path let alone technology.

It would be a bit drastic to buy a separate watch - the 800 should function perfectly for recording your runs.

Could the memory on the device be full? Try deleting some old activities (assuming you've already uploaded them to Garmin Connect/Strava).

No reason it shouldnt work and its the last thing I want to do after paying what I did for the 800. From Ashleeys previous post theres no guarantee the watch will pair again after a cycle.........
Yes all previous data has been uploaded so its not full.

I reckon your best bet is to use the Garmin 800 for the whole cycle and run activity but switch off auto lap. Press lap yourself when you change from running to cycling and vice versa. Don't stop the activity and reset, just leave it running. The laps will correspond to your different types of exercise. You can use auto pause still for when you are not moving

Then use Garmin Basecamp software on your pc/ mac (I've done it and it works) to split the event into a separate run and separate cycle etc. You can cut out any superfluous bits like while you are in a car for example. Upload these individual parts to Garmin Connect and Strava as separate events. If you have trouble with this then you will still have the full activity and so nothing is lost.

Make sure that your memory is clear before you start all this. When your Garmin uploads to the website the file is first moved to a cache on your pc/mac and you can find where from the Garmin help on their website. You can find old activities there that didn't make it to the Garmin Connect website for whatever reason, presuming that you haven't cleaned your system.

Don't buy a new gadget. I only bought the FR70 because a wanted an HRM and it was only a little bit extra on buying just an HRM and I could use it for spin classes indoors for which the Garmin 500 is not suitable.

I've got a Duathlon on Saturday.

I'm going to leave the watch recording for the whole thing and with auto pause on. That way when I am cycling and my runners are in the transition area then it should presume that I am not moving and pause. I will use the Edge 500 for cycling as normal. I will hope that the FR70 watch reconnects with my foot pod when I put my runners back on for the last run.

I'll let you know if it works.

This thread is risking extreme opprobrium though for discussing running and duathlons in the cycling forum and I've already been warned by my cycle club that if I turn up with knee high socks and a sleeveless top on Sundays then I can go off on my own.
