Don't know but maybe they photoshop them and put a new date on them.

So, that means , they are selling fake tax disks, has to be reported to Garda.

It's obviously illegal, but they would only work if stopped at a check-point, but if a garda car was behind you and checked your details from the reg via computer/pulse then you would be done.

Don't see the use of these really as they change the layout and colours regularly

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,377 ✭✭✭zenno

I must have 12 old tax discs in my glove compartment LOL i could be rich.

Seriously though, i still find it hard to believe that any money can be made from them old discs. I think i read somewhere a while ago that more and more garda cars are using automatic computer registration checks on any car that is in front of them but it could be all rubbish as with garda cutbacks.

I can see the appeal of vintage/classic tax discs but not more recent ones.

They change the colours on the 3 month tax discs but if you payed for a year tax disc then the colour would be stable and not changed as far as i know.

I'd say a lot of people use the photoshop thingy to change the date for the use of an old car that they know will be scrapped in a year or two though. It could be rampant for all we know.

I'd be more worried about ANPR and then actually being caught with a photoshopped disc.

People collect all sorts of things, can't see anything wrong with selling them if they're not photoshopped.

I have three years worth of tax discs sitting in the holder on my windscreen; Im sitting on a gold mine :D

    ANPR ?????

    Automatic Number Plate Recognition.

Don't see how it's illegal but can't see why you'd buy one either.

It's obviously something people collect for "memorabilia" value, look at the other stuff he's selling — coins, stamps, etc.

Disagree, I reckon the one expired this year will be photoshopped with a new reg and expiry date.

Unbelievable false economy, you'd be in far less trouble being caught with no tax as opposed to getting prosecuted for using a false instrument.

As long as the discs are out I don't see a problem?
People sell all kinds of weird stuff on ebay, and others pay them..

    That's brilliant.
I have a envelope where I put every used disc from my cars.
I think there must be over 50 tax discs in total.
I can make few quid out of it now it seems ;)

I have one that expired within 60 days. Another 49 older.
That makes £60.60 - still not bad

How come people keep their old tax discs? I always bin the old one as I don't see the point in keeping em, it's not like they need to be kept for proof of compliance....... Or am I missing something and I really should be keeping em.

No, you are not missing anything.
I keep them, because I generally keep everything.
I even have a complete set of my mobile phone bill for the whole contract (24 bills) of my first mobile phone from 1999.
I also have all my exercise-books from my primary school.

But it doesn't mean it's normal and everyone should keep things like that.

I collect expired Sky viewing cards so I could see why someone might collect tax discs. I don't see a problem if they're expired.

    I always keep them.

My reason comes from classic cars. I love buying one with loads of paperwork associated with it kept. Makes the cars very original.

Gives a great impression when selling a car that it's been looked after if the owner can whip out a ton of paperwork no matter how insignificant.

I once had a classic Rover that had the paper work to support the fact it was serviced at a main dealer every 1000-1300 miles. Also had all tax discs, MOT certs, invoices for tyres, balancing, tracking etc etc. I made a very good display board of a sample of the material to put up in the back window at some shows.

Habit. New disc goes over old disc in the holder. Truth be told Im just too lazy to take the old disc out.

The digital cards don't expire that often, they've only had three different issues (4 different designs). The analogue ones were much more frequent, sometimes every 1-2 years. They had 10 issues (6 different designs).

Ive kept all my tax discs the last five years since my car was new.
Stick them in a folder with complete detailed service history and it might just persuade a buyer in future that the car had a good owner. I mean if you are the type to keep every receipt and tax disc, you are unlikely to be a careless owner.
Keeping tbe discs also shows it was taxed continuous and not off the road for a couple of months for any reason.

I can understand why someone with say a 1960 Morris Minor might give a few quid for a tax disk from 1960 if anyone had one lying around (for display purposes only!).
