I just want to extend a big thanks to all on the site and call out the logs of colm_gti and godtabh in particular, as well as colm_gti for kindly answering my questions on pm!

After a long hiatus broken by only short bout of cycling in 2009 (plus the gaining of 30kg of weight ) I finally returned to the saddle yesterday having spent about two - three months reading through threads here, looking at reviews, checking out my commuting route and how feasible it was, etc. The posts on this section of boards were absolutely invaluable and I ended up with a Scott Speedster 60.

I was like a child gleefully pedaling away yesterday, giggling as I raced down hills while gasping for mercy on even the slightest incline. It was like a duck back to water generally - I thought I would be concerned about drivers and so forth but well learned instincts and awareness took over. The difference on a road bike is evident immediately and makes for a much more fluid cycle.

The first cycle was just getting my bearings, adjusting to the bike, enjoying the scenery and so forth. I have no lofty goals beyond commuting and the weekend.

Anyway, just thought I'd call out my thanks to everyone here and for the information and advice present.
