Hormones and weight gain

Alright this is more about a dog, Mods please let this stay here rather then the animals & pets forum, because I know I'll just have people saying that a weight gain after neutering is just an old wives tale. After having hormonal problems myself and realising that when one go's off the rest can too so I'm thinking that there's some truth to this old wives tale.

So does anyone know how a hysterectomy can alter the hormone balance which could lead to weight gain?

In our case dog did not gain weight at all. I didn't do anything different with her diet either after the op. She is however a young dog and extremely active. Gets plenty of exercise (walks/fields/and runs with the hub a fair bit).

No offence now but this is exactly the type of reply I didn't want. I don't want to know about anyone else's story of what happened or didn't happen. I want to know if the removal of the uterus and/or overies(in human or animal) can cause a hormone imbalance that could lead to weight gain.

In humans a hysterectomy in itself would not cause any hormonal disturbance.

If the ovaries are removed as well, this is commonly called a TAH-BSO operation, the "BSO" part meaning that both ovaries and tubes on both sides are removed.

It is also possible to remove just the ovaries (oophorectomy).

Removal of the ovaries basically produces a state analogous to menopause. So yes, it does change the "pre-menopausal" hormone balance.

Oestrogen and Progesterone would decrease, testosterone would increase relative to these. Testosterone does cause an increase in body muscle and fat stores, which may be evident as weight gain.

EDIT:my knowledge on the subject is limited to humans only.

this is what i call divination. you're asking a loaded question that you want to match the evidence to.

q-is there any possible way a hysterectomy can lead to weight gain?
    a-yes

therefore you say my / our / her weight gain is attributed to the hysterectomy. bad science. just stop overfeeding your dog

    1. I was asking a general question.
    2. I'm not assuming her weight gain is from her being neutered but it could be a part of it.
    3. I do not own a dog.
    4. If I did own her she'd be a fit little bitch.
