Howdy, I cant find the answer to this anywhere so why not ask the boardsies.

I have a '95 BMW E34 520i, and I have a fuel pressure test gauge hooked up by teeing into the fuel supply just after the fuel tank. When I shut the engine down the pressure reads 40psi, 20 mins later its still 40 (a drop of up to 7-8psi over 20mins is acceptable).

But 8 hours later in the morning I check again and the pressure is now almost zero. What should I be reading after such a time gap??

It should be zero, when you turn on the ignition the system primes to pressure before you start it, there is probably a release valve in the pump with let's off the pressure over time, what's your problem with the car?!

cheers padraicm, the problem is the car began to run a little rough, would even cut out while driving for a split second, sometimes while at red lights. Restarting and starting in the morning were a lucky bag, normal or long/hard.
