Do you think they're fair? Or is it a case of folk knowing folk that help their mates out if they're judges? Just curious, cuz it's a small country, and small industry. And do the listeners really care if a show won?

They are just industry awards that matter little to those who are not in that industry.

That's what I thought. I guess its what you do day to day that matters.

Doesn't really matter to the listeners unless they have a serious interest in the industry. As for their merits, they are dubious. Its hard to judge on a lot of them id imagine considering the landscape of Irish radio is so different in places. Some people only listen to RTE, others to Today FM, and then you have a huge collection of stations in Dublin alone that 2/3 of the country don't listen to.

Like "Music Broadcaster of the year Award" Dermot Whelan won it last year, but how can you say someone is the best music broadcaster, what is it based on, all they need to do is push a few buttons, but if it comes down their character and how interesting they are it gets confusing. Also there are hundreds of presenters around the country that never get looked at for these awards.

The fact is, the station/presenter nominates all the entries in a group and pay bout 100 euro to do so, so effectively presenters nominate themselves. It really is a load of old codswhollop, but the stations that pick up the awards will use their PPI status to garner advertisers

It was my understanding that they don't "nominate" themselves, they put together a package to demonstrate why they should win the award, and send that off. Bit like the Smedias.

(At least that's what I understand based on stuff Ray Foley has said both on and off air, so it's possible I took him up wrong)

But yeah, they're pretty meaningless to the average listener. I think the whole "One-For-Everyone-In-The-Audience!" attitude that seems to surround the PPI's makes them pretty irrelevant.

I think it was two years ago that Ray Foley won the Best Comedy Insert award, breaking Mario Rosenstock's 4-5 year domination of it, and to compensate they gave Rosenstock the Lifetime Achievement.

Stations pay to enter in a number of different categories, Music Station of the year, News story, Music Broadcaster etc.

Each entry costs around 100 euro, with discounts over a certain amount. You can enter for anything you want.

The entries are then short listed by a judging panel, made up of industry people, (PD's etc) down to 4 or so possibles.

On the night the main winner is given a Gold Award, followed by a Silver and Bronze. Seems fairly pointless to me, there should be just one winner.

In terms of Joe Soap, i dont think he gives a flying **** that 98/104/4fm/spin is an award winner.
