According to Google we won't have any. They're "emasculating".

Basically the same with more power, higher definition screens, more multimedia packed in.

Its more exciting to think about what we will be able to do with the devices in future, NFC will bring immense potential, you won't need to carry cards for anything anymore, you can buy cinema tickets from anywhere, you'll be able to pre book your meal in a restaurant and they'll be able to know how far away you are and start to prep the food as you get near etc...

The technology combined with an always on, always connected and always on you device with enough power will only be limited by our ideas.

I'm not so sure about 2020 but the next few years anyway,I would just expect more power, screen size leveling off and a lot more ecosystems as regards media and cloud storage and the like..

It means to make someone weaker or less effective.

Look up Google Glass or iWatch for a rough idea of how the mobile market may change in the next few years.

Hopefully a better battery life too

Flexible displays, and many years away, expandable devices.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,293 ✭✭✭MayoForSam

Future phones will replace PC's and laptops in the workplace, you'll have a WiDi monitor and wireless keyboard at your desk and your 'phone' will automatically dock when you're in the vicinity.

Throat mic for silent voice commands? In-built projector and holographic keyboard with motion sensing is also a possibility.

Battery life will need to be a lot better due to extra demands.

Cloud storage will be the norm. Google Glass could evolve into some really cool human-web interface. It'll be all about seamless integration with every day life.

Well with LTE and 4G rolling out, there should be a fully integrated social network. Look at something like the Dublin Bus, it tells you when the next bus is due. Next stage is to send you push notifications when its at a certain point so you can make your way to the stop.

You will have little cradles in your house, that when you get home, you place your phone into the cradle, and it will activate all the multimedia in your house. Your internet, telephone, tv will all be connected to the cradle with your phone in it (may no cradle will even be needed). Watching tv at home, and you decide to head out. Push a button and it appears live on your phone. Leave the house and your tv basically comes with you. One central hub to everything.

I know however I was being sarcastic as usually things in Ireland take way longer than they should which is why I joked it would be rolled out in 2020.

Really hope it's not one of the posts that's bumped in 7 years time and it turns out I'm right.

Well it has been trialed in the UK already.
I'd say we will be getting it in the next 12 to 18 months.
I'd expect them to take a price skimming approach to help offset the cost.

Good flexible phones are probably 3 years away.
I'd expect to see smart watches becoming more common in the next year.

Some scientists have successfully written small amounts of information on to DNA. It turns out to be a perfect partner for binary information. When that technology matures, it would allow huge storage capacities in a tiny space. Something like Google Glass could one day come with tens of terabytes of memory, written on DNA.

We'll also see wireless charging. You would have a hub in your house that would send out some sort of signal, and a coating of carbon nanotubes (which seem to be the answer to literally everything these days) on the phone's cover would convert this signal to electricity. The phone will begin charging in your pocket the moment you come home, or arrive at work.

Unbelievable when you think about how far technology has come in 15-20 years. I remember being in school, wide-eyed, as my teacher explained how he read his morning news not from a newspaper, but from the internet
