Android app to limit 3G to specific apps?

    Hi

In the past on a different phone I used a Vodafone official app which I think was either called Data Manager or Vodafone Data Manager. Whenever a new app was installed it would ask me if I wanted to allow this app to use 3G or Wifi or both - and possibly none at all.

My new Vodafone did not come with this app and when I search for it I cannot see it available anywhere.

I know there are other apps like Droidwall that will do this but you need root access and I am not rooting this phone just yet.

Do you know an application that can do this without root?

    Thanks

Thanks, but unfortunately that is just another data monitor app like so many others rather than an actual data manager that will limit certain apps to WiFi only etc.

Nice clean interface though, and tell me, if you use it, do you find their sister app Onavo extend subtantially lowers your data usage?

Em, ive used it myself to restrict access for kindle app.

Extend, It compresses the hell out of browsing. So if you go to websites with any kind of image content, it gets distorted to feck.

GreenPower battery saver app has a function that can restrict or allow an app wifi or 3g access. I don't know if the function is available in the free version or only in the paid one.

Another reason to pass then. I have used SSH tunneling in the past to encrypt my traffic but I owned the OpenSSH server I was going through. I am not really comfortable sending all my traffic through anyone else I do not have to.

Hi apologies, it seems when you first install it there is no app list whatsoever and it has to populate over time.

There now is a visible app list with 39 entries so I am curious as to how it populates the list, possibly it adds them as they try to use 3G.

Is there a way to add individual apps, or scan for all apps?

I notice it also will terminate apps trying to use it rather than just firewalling them, and I'm interested to see if will cause problems with apps I might want running, just without data access.

Thanks, I will try that also.

    Hi

Thanks, I appreciate your effort but when I open that it offers to uninstall it so I think that's the app they have currently readily available.

It will monitor our data, but it will not manage it, i.e. limiting certain apps to WiFi only, showing a complete list of all apps installed so their limit can be applied, and prompting each time any app is installed to make a decision.

Since ICS you can go into Settings>Data Usage
Select an app from the list & Restrict background data.
This stops it using mobile data in the background

Thanks, that will do it, but the Vodafone app presented a list with checkboxes so you could easily check on and off many apps at once rather than going through the few hundred etc.

Droidwall does just this but it requires root and I am not rooting just yet.

I do not think that is it but I will have a look, do you have the link from where you found it originally? I would rather install it from somewhere official rather than a dropbox account :)
