Boiler pump constantly on!

    Hi there,

Hoping someone can help by answering this question.

Should the pump above a gas boiler be permanently on?

It’s the black pump above the white boiler in the pic attached.

The reason I ask is it was replaced yesterday and its making a continuous humming sound since as it pumps water even when the gas boiler is off!!

I never noticed this with the previous pump which seemed to only make a noise when the gas boiler was on.

Last night we could even hear it from the next room!

Should I get back on to the boiler company and ask them to check it?

This is just day 1 and its already annoying me. Also if these things use much electricity my bill will go through the roof.

    Thanks for reading.
    B.

Probably wired incorrectly. Live & neutrals mixed up.

!!! Id imagine that would cause a severe fault!

Anyway turned out to be the PCB controller board.

This was replaced and the pump now stops automatically.

Pump would work perfectly on reverse polarity, causing no damage.

Odd how it only began after replacing the pump!

I've come across that a good few times with baxi Solo's.

Shane, would say the old pump had knackered the board (or even the old board had run the pump until it burnt out!)
Sneeze near a Solo pcb and you have to change it!

Very possible. Just that it is an external pump not integrated to the PCB but to the ouptut wiring connection of the boiler.

AFISIK without checking, it still controls overrun etc via the pcb

You are probably right. Does that non-system boiler have pump over-run? Good to know if it does and that is what created the PCB fault.

You are absolutely correct. PCB controls over-run & frost protection.
