Hi , I am currently looking to buy a landrover freelander probably 2001 year 2ltr diesel , I dont need the 4wd so will prob only have the 2wd (as far as i know you can get the 4wd removed to save fuel) . I would love to hear from someone who has one or someone who knows how many mpg would you get in these and are they a decent motor?
    Thanks

Simple enough to convert to 2wd, you just need to take out the prop shaft and VCU. Might be best to get a transfer box blanking plate (and probably one for the rear diff).
Not sure if that year had the Rover diesel or had they switched to the TD4 BMW engine.
As for fuel efficiency I would imagine around 30mpg...although I have never owned one...

Really nice car to drive - but one that seems to engender a lot of derision on the interweb. My Dad's is a two wheel 2002 TD4. Gear box is a bit rough in it, but drives nice enough and handles well. The turbo is really good at making sure it never feels sluggish or underpowered even at motorway speeds, but if you have it converted to 2wd the gearing is quite different and you'll have to apply the accelerator more on takeoff. Mpg used to be in the high 30s or low 40s depending on how its driven - I suspect on my Dad's there's currently a fault with the turbo solenoid meaning last week I calculated it as only getting 26-odd mpg - Range Rover territory!!!! In a TD4 if you are getting low mpg then there's a problem because its an economical engine. My own TD4 is great to drive - but very different feel to it. Can't give you mpg because I never checked - it's currently waiting for me to do the clutch on it. It was a 2001 on full 4 wheel drive, so it was much more nippy on take off from stop. Its gearbox was also a lot smoother.
I think everything about the car could be slightly better - driving height, weight distribution, some design choices - but it's an all round decent vehicle. If you can, go for the ES model - the one with extras like leather sears, folding mirrors and heated front windscreen... Got mine last year and still feels like luxury. At ten years old, though, you're going to have to factor in a few repairs. They're like tanks in some respects, in others (like window regulators) parts will probably need to be replaced at this stage. Small chance rust on the rear door or on sills. Price should be reduced by huge amount if thats the case. Mostly there won't be rust problems though - far less than other cars that age. Exhausts are quite cheap to replace. Slave cylinde/clutch is a big job (as a DIYer I really wish I paid someone to do this for me rather than trying myself). Anything specific you want to know about the? (not an expert, but I'm fairly familar with them at this stage)
