Calf with blockage

Hi Have a bucket reared calf not far from weaning that has a blockage /not Sh*ting, just wondering what peoples remidies are, vet thinks it could be twisted gut and would be dead in the morning, that was 2 days ago
she gave him a relaxant of some discription and we have been giving him parafin oil, and his milk in the evening as he is up and about, we rolled him about and stuck a needle in him to let off the gas, walked him around the yard some more, we're all out of ideas now
he is grinding his teeth a little and only refusing to get up now today

Probably is a twisted gut but in case its only bad constipation has anyone tried anything else with any success

Yeah twisted gut is fair bad alright. Had a yearling with it a few years ago. Vet had a looked and said it might better to go to the butcher. Loaded the poor fella into trailer and straight to the slaughter house. Asked the lads in the slaughter house to have look at his gut. So as the opened him there was grass, his gut had bust. Poor fella must have been in awful pain.

Give him norodine bolus tablet for the teeth grinding and bread soda to see would it settle his stomach and a bit more liquid parafin

Norodine bolous for teeth grinding ???
Are they not used for treating scouring calves .

It may not be the most medically accurate advice , but if we ever have a calf or lamb thats constipated , we mix up a solution of warm soapy water and with a lambs stomach tube insert inside him and give him a dose of that under the tail .

It breaks up the compaction and will help him dung .
It sounds a bit unusual but has worked several times here.

However these animals were just constipated , but your fella has been diagnosed with a twisted gut so that sounds more of an internal problem .
But at this stage anything is worth a try if he is starting to fail on you

Teeth grinding is a sign of an upset stomach and our vet recommended using noridine bolus and they worked well for us last year

I think we were told to use Treacle once..Remember having to buy a tub or two of it..

The liquid parafin should do the job though.

    Thanks everyone for the advice
he's had nearly 3 lts of parfin so i dont really want to give him any more
we have tried an enema with a syringe of soapy water etc and what looks like mucas came out but it had a waxy oily feel which make me thing a little of the parafin has come through
what is annoying me is he is still bright in himself drinking water a bit slower to get up alright
We are going to get a tube today and try getting it in and see if it will do anything
whay volume of soapy water could you put in there?

    We use a 50ml syrenge.
Letting a little out as you go.
Then when we came to a stop let out about 20ml and worked tube back and forward.
Easy does it. And ensure the tube is smooth at the tip.

No died yesterday, pity was a good strong calf to be honest I would have got him put down today if he hadn't, he would have been suffering too much

It's a bitch but better now than in a year when you've invested far more into him.
I lost one yesterday too, only down €90. + about €20 in feeding. If he had been a calf from a suckler cow I'd be down the €500 for keeping the cow for the year.

    Sorry to hear that FD.
Guys, sorry to hijack thread but how much coffee and liquid parafin to give a young calf under a week. This is for my little fella that had his guts hanging out, from the cow tearing the naval. He hasn't passed any dung yet except for the initial dark dung.
I'm giving him 2 lts of the cows beastings twice per day at the moment.

    Sorry to hear that.
    No surprise though.
This a suckler calf? Going to buy a calf to put under the cow for the year?
