Looking for sports doctor recommendation, but not for injury

Not looking for medical advice but a suggestion for a doctor to see. Are there any medical doctors with particular interest in sports medicine but not just sports injuries but also medical issues and so on?

I have issues with unexplained fatigue and I'm thinking a sports-oriented doctor might be useful, perhaps for some micro-nutrient analysis or the like. I have already had lots of tests with a GP and a specialist but no satisfactory answers.

There are sports medicine doctors in UCD and some other places that I can see.

Has anyone any experience of someone like this? Did you see a sports medicine doctor? How did you find it?

    Preferably Dublin area please.

I'd call the sports medicine dept in Sports surgery clinic out in santry. Just tell them whats going on and they'll put you with somebody suitable. I found them to be top class. Not cheap but you do get the royal treatment. 130 bills for the initial assessment so if you can swing that I'd head out there.

I posted a similar question recently and got one reply with a recommendataion for a guy in Raheny but that mightn't suit you.

I also contacted Sports Surgery Clinic and was recommended this guy http://www.sportssurgeryclinic.com/about/surgeons_physicians/physicians/consultant_sports_physician/dr-andy-franklyn-miller1.html

But as was said already, it's 130 for first consultation so a bit steep really but I'd say would be well worth it if you really need to get to the bottom of your issues.

I cant really comment on another mans looks(It says so in "The rules for men") but like I said he knows his stuff and hes seriously qualified so you'd be in good hands.

I think it might have been me who recommended Raheny Medical, but they wouldn't be sports / micro nutrient specialists or anything. They're GPs, I just found them understanding about running - like when I had bronchitis they were willing to talk about me doing a race that weekend & what was the best was to be as fit as possible for it (taking a rest beforehand, using my inhaler etc). I just found them helpful; they didn't just say 'don't run if you're tired / have a cough')

Thanks, though not cheap, as you say. He does sound like he's mainly musculo-skeletal but may be worth a call. Did you see him for an injury or illness?

I saw him for an injury but Im pretty sure he's a qualified medical doctor first and foremost so I think his scope is beyond that of just injuries. Sure if you give them a call and tell them over the phone what the story is they'll put you with the most suitable doctor that fits your case.

I'll call and ask, but every doctor is a qualified medical doctor and I've seen several already. I'm looking for particular expertise. Thanks.

Does anyone have any experience of Dr Joe Conway, Dr Phillip Carolan or Dr Rod McLoughlin?

All are sports medicine doctors that I've seen mentioned. Again I'm wondering about particular expertise in medical issues, not injury issues.

I saw Joe Conway who treated me for tennis elbow (referred me to another well-known specialist in the Santry Sports Clinic or whatever it's called - who I consider to have ripped me off royally, but that's another thread altogether ).

I got the impression that Joe Conway is all about injuries, but I could be wrong. He also treated my BIL for a knee injury. Very sound man, who I don't think would take you on just for the sake of it unless he thought you could help, so might be worth sounding him out. He eventually sorted out my problem anyway. And BIL's.

Thanks Heidi. Would you mind PMing me the name of the doc you were not happy with? Please don't post it here.

Joe Conway is outstanding. He has a very well rounded sports medicine knowledge and is by no means just injury-focused. Very knowledgeable about running too. He has brought many good Irish athletes back to health from illnesses and other health issues, and what you'll find with him, more than most other doctors, is he actually cares. The attention he gives you doesn't stop the moment you walk out of his practice. Couldn't recommend him highly enough.

seeing the same guy at the moment for foot tendon issues, have to say i'm very impressed with the treatment. it's not cheap by any means as already indicated, but I'm back running and working on making long term adjustments. worth the money in my eyes
