    Hi there,

What do the cyclists among you think of bike safety in Trinity given a good bike like? Has anyone had bikes stolen etc?

    Any info appreciated!

I have a pretty nice racer which I cycle in to college with every day. I've never had any bike issues but I do use 2 locks, a D kryptonite and a basic chain lock.

Some of the bikes you see around the campus have shocking locks so I wouldn't be surprised if one is stolen every now and then :(

Tons are stolen on a daily basis, dont go cheap on locks!

I've heard that bikes are stolen fairly regularly from down around the Pearse St entrance.

Some scumbag was trying to sell me a bike for €20 down by hamilton one night. I can't be sure but I think he may have stolen it

I've been wondering lately, what's with all the abandoned locks around the Lincoln gate? They don't look broken and it seems like a lot of bikes to have been stolen so close to the security booth

That's where my bike was stolen last May. When I went to college security they said it's rampant around the campus and the best place to lock your bike is off-campus.

I had a good lock on my bike so they just took the saddle :(
It was locked to the railings by the Museum building.

Did you have a quick release seatpost collar?

Don't forget that good locking technique is also very important. Make sure to lock both the wheels and the frame, and both to the anchor point. Particularly important when the wheels have a quick release. Plenty of videos on Youtube if you want a visual example.

Regarding abandoned locks, many people leave their locks locked at where they are going to leave their bikes, saves carrying a big chunk of metal in and out every day!

That makes sense; there's some good quality locks hanging there and they all look fine.
