Damaged hubby's chrome Interior BMW

    Hello!
I dented the chrome strip on the dashboard of my hubby's car today
The strip above the glove compartment?
I am hoping to replace it before he flips the lid
Can any one give me an idea what cost I'm facing to replace this strip?
Also any tips where I can purchase the part online as I can only find full interior kits?

    Any advice great!
Ps advice along the lines of 'don't drive your husbands BMW' is not really helpful at the min lol

Assuming this is the aluminium effect strip that has the centre vents in it?

The likes of partfinder.ie might throw up a breaker with the right part

Don't feel too bad, the interiors of the E60/E90/E92 all dent and mark very easily. The aluminium in my E92 is covered in tiny marks and dents.

You could try www.partfinder.ie for the part. I don't think the fact that it's a 550i would make a difference as the interiors are usually the same so you could get an aluminium panel from a 520d if there's one out there and it will fit perfectly.

Just remember that if you ask for one for a 550i, you more than likely will end up paying more than if you ask for one for a 520d even though it's the same part.

Of course they will, I never said they wouldn't!

I had a look an realoem and it only goes as far as february 2007 for the 550i in Europe.

Thanks, I do plan to call them tomorrow. my hubby has been driving BMWs a few years now and I know buying parts directly from a BMW dealer can be more expensive so I'm looking for cheaper options at the moment

    I'm surprised there's even a 550i in Ireland ....

And I hit the same problem, only goes to 2007. But judging by this:

    http://bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/E60/Sedan/Europe/550i-N62N/2007/browse/vehicle_trim/decorative_strips_aluminium/
    Decorative strip, alum., I-panel, left
    51 45 6 951 053

    ALU FEINSCHLIFF
    Right-hand drive

    €82.10

    expensive!

You'd be surprised, these parts aren't as expensive as you might think.

CM - the question as to whether or not there's a 550i in Ireland, let alone a 2008 550i is something that has been spinning around in my mind since I saw this thread :pac:

Although, very possibly imported from the UK.

no harm in trying your nearest main dealer at least you will have a starting point at the cost of the part

ahahahahahaa, its a 550i, nobody bought those 'for the craic' unless her yoga instructor , sisters and good looking friend are coming over to do the same, i think he'll care

Part numbers for the 520d are the same as the 550i when it comes to the interior trim.

It looks like you're looking for #2 in this - http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=NW52&mospid=50116&btnr=51_5086&hg=51&fg=45 - part no 51456951053.

Not sure how much an Irish dealer will charge but the UK cost is £201 from here - http://www.cooper-bmw-parts.co.uk/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&sku=51456951053&Search=Go&page=shop.product_details&flypage=shop.flypage&option=com_virtuemart

EDIT: Challengemaster above has this part for €82!!

disappointing, was hoping to see pics of the ops hubby's '550i..'

does such a car exist, if it does whats the point when you can get a M5.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,028 ✭✭✭anthony4335

Tell him thats what he gets for not buying the 550i. What you need to do is take some 180 sand paper to the corner of one of the bumpers and I will say it may take a while from him to notice the little dent inside. But be sure to do this just after he has driven the car. Failing that ebay.

Of course it exists, it's a 4.4L 362bhp V8 6-speed. The M5 is a 5L 500bhp v8 7-speed with the accompanying price tag of an ///M car, you can shave serious cash off the price opting for a 550i if it's being offered.

seeems you wont even need the ham sandwich now, so theres a saving!

    4.8 actually in the E60.

OP, you could always rent one and swap! :)
Failing that, I'd try the naked route as suggested. He'll be fine. Tell him it's 5 years old now and time it was upgraded to an F10.

Funnily enough, I was behind a woman in a 550i this morning. I've seen it around a few times but always just assumed it was another 520 (with German style plates), it wasn't until I was right behind it this morning I spotted the badge, otherwise I'd never have known it was a 550. A real sleeper, the badge is the only clue.

    Waaaaiit a minute.. :pac:

Except a 520D as a single exhaust pipe and the 550I has twin exhaust pipes (left side)

    In the 550i's favour:

Manual gearbox available in Europe, unlike the M5 (I think)
It's low profile, so less likely to be nicked
    It's cheaper

Diplomats drive them. Saw a black 550i at Westmoreland St. recently.

I love the idea of the 550i. Same as the E39 540i.

Most owners could probably afford the respective M5 no problem, but choose not to get one. Very cool.

Id really love to know if the ops husband has actually got a 550 badge on the back of the 520d.
Last weekend I saw a bog standard mercedes cls 320cdi with cls 63 amg badging on the back. Its a nice car as is. Why make a tool of yourself doing that crap.

That is kind of cool alright. I know a guy like that. Test drove the E39 M5 at the time, thought it a bit too firm for his liking and went for the 540i.
Same a few years later, thought the M6 was a bit too firmly setup, so opted for a 650i instead. Nice to know there are folk out there who don't need to look at the price tag when making a decision!

I had to deal with one (number years ago) , BMW 535 E34 , with shy 1.8 .l, badge at the back. wonder why people do this ? want to impress somebody how powerful is his 1.8 ?

    So it wouldn't get nicked.

My knowledge in BMW exterior differences is near to nothing, But i think , there is some difference between them two. who know BMW , they would know, what engine it has ? Or 518 and 535 (with auto box) would look exactly same ?

Yeah, I would think so too, but I do think that is the logic behind 'badging down' a car's spec.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,060 ✭✭✭Kenny Logins

Well, thats was not in Ireland, down in my native country, engine size wouldnt make any difference at that time in tax or insurance. Person, who was driving that bmw was ... id say bad person, everyone was looking for him.

    Saw a 5 series 06 or 07 i think in cork badged 550i and also a fake white 08 "M5".
