Body Type: Ectomorph, Mesomorph or Endomorph

Today is the first time I ever heard of this body type characterization. Do you subscribe to this school of thought?

I would guess I`m an Endomorph.. relatively short, gain fat easy. About 178cm and 84.5kg (although I probably should be about 76kg if you account for the extra body fat). Diet is the biggest problem but need to spend more time in the gym.

    Pay no attention to it.

The problem with for me is that it doesn't exactly tell you very much. If you're fat you're probably going to want to lose it. If you're skinny, you're probably going to want to put on muscle. What difference does using made up Latin names make?

seems like a nice way for people to find another excuse

    Yes. It is not science.
Similar to "big boned", "slow metabolism", "thyroid problems".
Anything that a person can attribute blame rather than accept responsibility and force change internally.

In fairness there's a bit of logic in it, in that where you store weight and how quickly you lose it from certain areas will be determined by your bodytype. Similar to the pear/apple/hourglass shapes in women.

People can clearly be classified according to where they carry weight.

And what difference will it make to split them into one of three categories?

It demonstrates where you are most likely to lose weight first, no?

I said there was SOME logic around it, not that it should be the holy grail for creating a training/weight loss programme.

    No it doesn't.

It's from a not very well supported psychological theory that claimed people were treated/behaved differently depending on whether they looked strong, week, or fat.

It's not really going to change the fact that someone who feels they have too much body fat will want to drop body fat %. Someone who has a low amount of muscle will want to put on muscle. It's not much of a theory, just a very basic observation.

The whole theory looks great in hard back books too.
Truth is we are all different shapes and sizes. In a few years that will change.

God I need to read it properly so!:o I thought it just referred to 3 different body types with regards to weight loss/gain.
I just read the OP and looked at the not so pretty pictures.

They are known as the three somatotypes. They were coined by an american psychologist who believed body type correlated with temperment. To prove this he took naked pictures of thousands of male ivy league students. That should really ring alarm bells with anyone. I think like the whole hardgainer thing, its a crutch for people who arent getting results as well as a selling point for supplement companies. Distant yourself from all that, work hard and eat well.
