    Hi,

I'm not sure if this is the right forum...

I've come across a couple of Hi 8 tapes taken about 25 years ago and was hoping to get them on a DVD or in some sort of digital format so they can be passed around on a memory key, stored on a computer.

What equipment would I need to get the video from the tapes and onto my laptop or straight onto a DVD? I have access to the Hi 8 camcorder that took the videos, and DVD burner on my laptop but that's it.

Any ideas or guides I could follow?

You need an interface between the video and audio out cables of the Hi8 and the computer. This means a bit of hardware like a video capture card. this guy in the clip is doing it from VHS bit it the same principle. They are using what you would be using(a composite video and audio connection).

If you are going to be just doing a tape or two you would be as good just getting it transferred by a company like this. It would save you time and maybe money.

I have no connection to them except they did transfer for me before.

The simplest way is to just go directly from the camera to a standard DVD player/recorder. It's exactly the same as recording off the TV except the video signal is coming from a camera not a sky box/UPS or whatever. So no hardware needed. Of course if the camera doesn't have an AV output you'll have to get one that does or a Hi8 player.

Once on DVD you can rip the disks onto your computer if you want them as files on a drive too.
