NCT- Too much oil = Fail??

    Hi all,

    Had my NCT today and failed on having too much oil in the engine which prevented them from doing the emissions test. The low oil light came on in my car a few weeks ago so I topped it up but I obviously topped it up a bit much. I did check the dip stick as I filled but must have over filled or had the car on a slope thus giving an incorrect dip stick reading.

    The NCT guy advised me to have some oil drained and being the car back within 28 days so they can run the emissions test.

    It's a formal re-test so it's going to cost me €28.

    Two questions please:

    1. Do I really need to get someone to drain some oil or will I likely burn off enough oil over a couple of weeks? (It's just over the limit apparently)

    2. Do I need to re-book for a re-test or is it a walk in?

    1. If your car is burning a lot of oil, it might burn it. Only you know how much oil your car is burning. Also having it above the limit, might cause oil to start leaking and therefore you will lower its level. However I would advice to have it drained as quickly as possible, assuming no damage to your car was done already. Having too much oil is one of the easiest way to kill the engine.

    2. Yes, you need to book a retest and pay retest fee.

    Get some axle stands and put the front of the car on them, then open the sump plug nut gently and let a little bit of oil out (have gloves on and a basin/container to collect the oil)

    Its a five min job - couldn't be easier

    Thanks lads, appreciate it.

    The car isn't burning much oil (top up every 5,000 km or so) so I guess I'll need to drain a bit off. Stupid mistake to make.

    BTW, I'm just curious about how too much oil can damage the engine. Does it create to much pressure or something like that?

    Its the exact same as having too little oil it will damage your engine (I'm not sure why)

    Too much oil can foam within the engine and your oil pump is now trying to pump oil with air bubbles around the engine. This could result in oil starvation in some parts of the engine. In other engines it increases the pressure and result in weaping seals and oil leaks.

    In most engines its just as bad to have too little as too much oil. Best to stay within the marks on dip stick. With car on level surface and allowing time for oil to drain back into sump fill to high level mark on dip stick. after adding oil give it a few mins to flow down into sump before checking level and adding more oil if needed.

    Did you top up oil with engine hot?did you wait for about 10min to Check level?
    To much oil will put pressure on internal parts and cause damage

    were it burning a lot of oil, i guess it would fail on emissions anyway

    It would push your emissions high anyway.

    Too much will damage seals and rings. Way too much you hydrolock the engine.


    Too little will leave bearings and metal on metal parts running hotter untill they fail. Very slow process.

    Up to you of course but rather than bothering with it yourself you can just have someone suck some oil up through the dip hole at a mechanics. Probably a fiver.
    Ring a local garage and ask if they have an oil extractor.

    What I do is use a simple 50cc syringe (which I have from giving the horses their medicine) with about a meters length of pneumatic hose.

    Down the dipstick hole it goes and I take a measured bit out at a time until it's right.

    if you can get those two things then it's as simple as opening your bonnet.
