Im looking for a jeep. Its my first jeep so Im not really sure what to be looking out for. The only thing I ask is that it must have back seats. And preferably a nice boot. Oh and something thats not going to destroy my wallet on juice.

Im on a budget of about 5000 but could probably stretch to 6500 if something really nice came along.

I like the Santa Fe's I thought it was a lovely drive. But Ive heard some awful stories. Hmmm any recommendations? I will consider any make/model.

why are you buying a jeep then, they love petrol stations :D

for that budget id reccomend a Kia Sorento, cheaper than a landcruiser , reliable, the 2.5 litre engine is fairly solid and it moves well, lots of space in them too, full time 4wd and a low range box.

http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/4580429 theres one with leather, 5 speed auto, climate control, heated seats, heated windscreen youd get that for 6500 cash

Ah nothing too fancy. Just to hold a few tools and get me around the countryside.

Which 4X4 might be a better thread title.

Quite fancy a Land Rover Defender 110 myself.

    PS: I hate Jeeps.

A 1997-2003 Landcruiser is about as good of a jeep as can be got. However they aren't all that economical but what jeep is.

I was just on donedeal and I saw one or two 06 Dmax crewcabs that look good.

Only thing is they're 3 liters. Id probably get wiped out at the petrol station  :(

Apart from that are they well regarded?

the santa fe is a front wheel drive car with a bit of rear wheel kick when it loses traction, the sorento is a full 4x4 with a center differential, low range box and transfer case, its a little worse on fuel (28 vs 31 mpg) but a lot more practical as a 4x4 , no nasty head gasket issues like the 2.2 santa fe is presenting , and having driven both and owned a sorento I can safely say the sorento is better equipped and easier to find with all the extras on it.

I currently have a 2010 d-max, the 06 is pre facelift and its just an earlier version of the engine I have, the 4wd system is reliable, the engine has no horror stories but the handling isnt as good as the sorento / landcruiser. Maintenance is relativity cheap and the 3 litre does 28mpg (30 if your all motorway and no towing) Only caveat really is that the back seats are in no way spacious if the driver or front passenger are over 6 foot.

A car will do that, and with more comfort, safety and economy than a Jeep. Do you need to go off-road?

I'd love a Defender myself (for no particular reason other than to have a jeep lol) buy Isuzu are supposed to be good.
    Maybe this? http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/4537723

OP also states that fuel costs are a concern, so agree with Anan and would also suggest an estate.

I test drove the new and previous model Santa Fe and had the current Sorento for a few days - for me the Sorento had a much more comfy driving seat.

OK the sorento is looking like a real winner then. I think I'll go with that. Any particular years to look out for or avoid as the case may be?

Anan: Not knitpicking, but I always thought jeeps/4x4 were safer then cars if you crashed?

the sorento was introduced in 03 and had a 4 speed auto box (avoid that) 04 and beyond are all fine, there were 2 recalls on the 06 model but that was for a clock and a bolt so they both should have been done. the EX model is the basic spec , if it was an irish car GLS or GSE is the high end, from the UK XS or XSE were the high end , the price difference is negligible so id try find one with leather, heated seats, climate control etc.. as its a much nicer place to be.

Not necessarily. Depends on what you crash into, and also many of them are more likely to be involved in an accident in the first place. I'd rather be in a car that avoided an accident than a jeep that didn't!

It depends on the individual make/model. They have ncap ratings the same as cars do.
