It's not OK to ask how to bypass the law.

On second thought - pump, can you clarify what it is that you're looking for exactly?

As far as I remember they are perfectly legal in the UK but its an offense to even be in possession of one in the Republic of Ireland.

They are legal to buy and own in Ireland ……… but ………… not legal to use on public roads.

In the north and the uk they are legal to buy and use on public roads.

My question is what is the northern Ireland site selling them ?

Im a bulk tanker driver and will be working a lot in the north and uk over the next two years where I will use it.

Im not trying to bypass the law as they legal to own in Ireland anyway I could just buy one in Halfords or the like up north if I wanted to.

Anyway sorry if any one takes offence to my question!

    :D

Unless you get the one that also scrambles the reading on the speed gun are these not pretty much useless?
By the time the detector detects the speed gun being pointed at your car surely the speed gun has already calibrated your speed and displayed it?

no there are other ones but im saying nothing dont think the powers to be liking this thread i started lol

Correct if you talking about laser. No detector will pick up laser and give you enough time to react. Radar you may get some time (See below) However to 'scramble' would be illegal for laser or radar.

There's no radar detector on the market that can detect the GoSafe vans with any decent range so hang up the boots on that quest ;) You'll get on average about 100m notice. Maybe more, probably less. Remember at 80km/h+ that's no range at all. They work best in the US simply because they use much higher power and less sophisticated polarisation etc. Here in Europe its very different.

Use of one would be illegal anyway in both countries. They are illegal to import into Ireland so you can't bring one into the country. You can't have one in your car whether its in use or not. So even if its in a sealed lead bag its illegal. They are full stop, no but's illegal in Ireland. The UK also closed the loop hole in the (I think Telegraph Act) so they are a seriously grey area there as well. A judge in Ireland would crucify you for having one. There was a test case in Mullingar I believe in 2007.

Either way on an Irish license in the UK your immune to points just the fine. So if that's your worry, its far more cost effective to just slow down or pay the occasional fine. PM me if you want to discuss any of this.

i think this is the guy the OP is thinking of

    http://www.getcaraccessory.co.uk/info/speed-camera-defence-armagh.html

i'd say's he's no longer in the business of selling radar detectors.. they were shocking prices he was asking for.

Do a search on you tube, there are a few ones that look pretty effective on irish roads.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,267 ✭✭✭mikeecho

i've looked at youtube, and some are effective, even more effective when placed on their side.

But the youtube vids also show that they aren't so effective when approaching the van from the front, ie the van is on the opposite side of the road.

Could you not program the more frequented speed gun/van places on your GPS? I do that on mine and it has a proximity sensor and beeps if I am over the limit.

In all honesty, they are at best a second line of defence. Not something to be relied on in Ireland against GoSafe. Bring a corner into the equation and forget about. You won't detect it until your almost bang on top of it.

And in all cases remember they are illegal to use or even bring into the Rep. of Ireland.

Is using trapster legal? It gives a warming coming up to speed traps I think.

Grey area really. I know there was a bit of discussion about it in the news when GoSafe was in the really early planning stages. It kind of came down to the fact that Trapster won't tell you if a speed trap is actually in use or not, it will just alert you to the fact that one is 'sometimes' there. That would be unlike actually detecting a speed trap which is illegal.

Trapster is community powered so really its only any good if others are using it AND travelling the same roads as you are. Its fairly good in the States I have to say when I was there. Common sense would prevail however and I doubt anyone would be prosecuted for having Trapster on their phone.

trapster comes under the same umbrella as the TOMTOM and Garmin warning alerts.
The law refers to devices capable of detecting roadside speed monitoring devices ie radar/laser detectors.
Trapster / Garmin /TomTom alert you to a gps co-ordinate, thus they are completely legal, as they don't actually detect the roadside device.

but then again, part 3 could be interpreted that they are illegal !?!?
    http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/1991/en/si/0050.html
    S.I. No. 50/1991:
ROAD TRAFFIC (SPEED METER DETECTORS) REGULATIONS, 1991.

ROAD TRAFFIC (SPEED METER DETECTORS) REGULATIONS, 1991.

The Minister for the Environment in exercise of the powers conferred on him by sections 5 and 11 of the Road Traffic Act, 1961 (No. 24 of 1961) and by section 9 of the Road Traffic Act, 1968 (No. 25 of 1968) hereby makes the following Regulations:—

    1. These Regulations may be cited as the Road Traffic (Speed Meter Detectors) Regulations, 1991.

    2. These Regulations shall come into operation on the 1st day of April, 1991.

    3. In these Regulations, "speed meter detector" means any device which is capable of being used to indicate the existence of, or to frustrate the operation of, electronic or other apparatus being used to give indications from which the speed at which a person was driving can be inferred.

    4. A person shall not use in a public place a mechanically propelled vehicle to which is fitted, or in or on which is carried, a speed meter detector whether or not such device is actually in use.

    5. (1) The importation or supplying of, or offering to supply, a speed meter detector is hereby prohibited.

    (2) The fitting of, or offering to fit, a speed meter detector to a mechanically propelled vehicle is hereby prohibited.

    6. Article 5 of these Regulations shall be a penal Regulation.

in theory having your phone or laptop in a car, would enable you to view the garda website, that shows the existence of the speed camera zones.. so is that illegal ? (i think not)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,004 ✭✭✭ironclaw

any device which is capable of being used to indicate the existence

I'm not read in law, but I would interpret that as being able to tell if the speed check is currently in operation not that it is 'sometimes' there. Your Garmin / Trapster unit won't tell you if the speed check is in operation. However Trapster would be a grey area if someone update a live trap before you came to it. That would be the equivalent of flashing your lights at someone and thus perverting the course of justice. Radar / Laser detection would be fully illegal under the Act however.

Its for the law makers to argue though! I'm just speculating.
