Hardwareversand build blew up

Ok I bought a Hardwareversand custom PC back in September using their online builder. All was well until today; the computer had gone into sleep mode after I'd unplugged the USB keyboard and mouse to work with them on another PC. I plugged the mouse back into the USB, but the keyboard I may have put the USB cable on backwards briefly before realising my mistake. (Its remarkably easy to do)

That was when I noticed the computer was actually off and wouldn't start. I then noticed the smell coming out of it :(

So NOTHING will start, at all. Monitor works and the system is getting power (one light at the front of the computer is on) but pressing the power button does nothing.

I guess that I'll have to get it repaired or RMAed to HVS. Anyone had experience of this before? How efficient are they and what timescales are we looking at?

What you mean by backwards? You plugged the keyboard in backwards?

I don't really understand what you mean by backwards. The usb won't physically fit in backwards. I've heard you're better off ringing them than trying to email them.

Yes, the USB on the top of the tower. It sounds crazy but the piece of plastic inside the plug that means it can only go in one way was floating in the center of the plug a little (since I bought it) and the cable must have gone in the wrong way, only for a few seconds. Research online says a USB short is unlikely to cause this but it seems weird that I smelt burning when I did.

Do you have a different PSU to see if the PSU just dumped.

I'm walking away from it for this evening. Plugged both HDDs into a second computer that I have (to recover data). When I put in the second one, I discovered that that computer wont boot. What the hell.

Sorry to hear that mate but I honestly have no idea what's wrong with it. Hopefully someone with a bit more experience will come along.

Second HDD thing was my own stupidity. Am going to try another PSU once some files are finished copying.

Something similar happened to me during the summer.A power surge (caused by lightning) obliterated my PC.Had some lights on the pc working.Turns out the processor and the ram got fried, good times!

My brother plugged the case usb cable headers in backwards by mistake and blew the whole motherboard. When he replaced the motherboard all other components were fine. Sounds like you have experienced a similar issue.

As for the second computer, I assume it posts. Obviously I can't be sure what's wrong but you could try repaireing the Windows installation using a Windows disk, or by selecting the repaire Windows option windows offers after an unsuccessful windows system boot. I have had trouble with hard disks recently, an in one instance I had to take out the cmos battery for a few seconds to get Windows to boot. I doubt you will have prolonged issues with this system if you keep messing about with it. You could also try changing the achi options in the BIOS. My last drive stopped responding in SATA mode, but could be used in IDE mode.
